Dr. Mona Zaghloul (ECE) is the principal investigator on a two-year, $150,000 National Science Foundation grant for the project “Enhancement of Piezoelectric Properties in Two-dimensional Materials.”
Publications:
Dr. David Broniatowski (EMSE) has published the following article: A. M. Jamison, D. A. Broniatowski, M. Dredze, A. Sangraula, M. C. Smith, and S. C. Quinn. “Not just conspiracy theories: Vaccine opponents and proponents add to the COVID-19 ‘infodemic’ on Twitter,” Harvard Kennedy School Misinformation Review. Co-author Michael C. Smith recently graduated as an EMSE PhD student.
Dr. Payman Dehghanian (ECE) has published the following journal article through a collaboration of the GW SmartGrid Lab, Aalborg University (Denmark), and Sharif University of Technology (Iran): V. Blaabjerg, “Correlation-Driven Machine Learning for Accelerated Reliability Assessment of Solder Joints in Electronics,” Nature Scientific Report, Vol. 10, No. 14821, pp. 1-14, 2020.
Dr. Matthew Kay (BME), his BME trainee Grant Kowalik, and his collaborators have published this article: V. Jain, S. Kimbro, G. Kowalik, I. Milojevic, N. Maritza Dowling, A. L. Hunley, K. Hauser, D. C. Andrade, R. del Rio, M. W. Kay, and D. Mendelowitz. “Intranasal Oxytocin Increases Respiratory Rate and Reduces Obstructive Event Duration and Oxygen Desaturation in Obstructive Sleep Apnea Patients: a Randomized Double Blinded Placebo Controlled Study,” Sleep Medicine, 74, 242–247, 2020. This manuscript presents new clinical insights into the beneficial effects of activating the oxytocin neuron network to reduce apnea events and hypoxia in patients suffering from obstructive sleep apnea. This is the result of a long-term collaboration between SEAS, GW’s School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and the GW Medical Faculty Associates. Grant Kowalik performed the signal processing in this study.
Drs. Tian Lan (ECE) and Suresh Subramaniam (ECE) have published the following paper with former graduate students Sultan Alamro and Maotong Xu: S. Alamro, M. Xu, T. Lan, and S. Subramaniam. “Shed+: Optimal dynamic speculation to meet application deadlines in cloud,” IEEE Transactions on Network and Service Management, Vol. 17, No. 3, pp. 1515--1526, Septmeber 2020.
Dr. Roger Lang (ECE) has published this paper: A. Sharma, R. H. Lang, M. Kurum, P. E. O’Neill, and M. H. Cosh. “L-Band Radar Experiment and Modeling of a Corn Canopy Over a Full Growing Season,” IEEE Transactions of Geoscience and Remote Sensing, Vol. 58, Issue 8. Dr. Sharma used a vegetation model developed by Dr. Lang to model a corn canopy from early June to late September. The data was taken by Dr. Kurum using an L Band radar built in conjunction with Dr. O’Neill of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in 2012. Both Drs. Sharma and Kurum received their PhD degrees under Dr. Lang’s direction.
Dr. Taeyoung Lee (MAE) has published the following paper with his former student Dr. Mahdis Bisheban: M. Bisheban and T. Lee. “Geometric Adaptive Control with Neural Network for a Quadrotor in Wind Fields,” IEEE Transactions on Control System Technology, 2020.
Dr. Ahmed Louri (ECE) and his PhD students, Ke Wang and Hao Zheng, have published the following themed article: K. Wang, H. Zheng, and A. Louri. “TSA-NoC: Learning-Based Threat Detection and Mitigation for Secure Network-On-Chip Architecture,” IEEE Micro: Special Issue on Machine Learning for Systems, Vol. 40, Issue: 5. In this special issue, the editors peer-reviewed a significant number of submissions and selected only six to demonstrate state-of-the-art designs that have explored the use of ML models to improve and optimize the computing systems. Dr. Louri's work exploits the use of machine learning to enhance the security of computing systems. Specifically, it describes how machine learning techniques can be used to detect abnormal network behavior induced by hardware trojans and how to automatically reconfigure the network to address security vulnerabilities. This work also presents a high-performance and energy-efficient design for threat mitigation. It will provide a secure and reliable communication fabric for current and future computing systems, including mobile devices, the Internet of Things, System On a Chip (SoC), parallel computers, data centers, and more. This research was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and an endowment fund.
Dr. Tom Mazzuchi (EMSE), Dr. Shahram Sarkani (EMSE), and Dr. Mazzuchi’s student Andre Douglas have published the following paper: A. Douglas, T. Mazzuchi, and S. Sarkani. “A stakeholder framework for evaluating the ‐ilities of autonomous behaviors in complex adaptive systems,” Systems Engineering, Vol. 23, Issue 5, September 2020, pp. 633-655.
Other News:
In the current issue of the journal Earth and Space Science, a team of scientists and engineers at JPL/NASA, used the Semi-Circular Bend (SCB) specimen to find the fracture toughness of Martian rock, based on the information and material sent by the Mars rover. The paper is: R. E. Kronyak, et al., Predicting the Mechanical and Fracture Properties of Mars Analog Sedimentary Lithologies, Earth and Space Science. Vol. 7, Issue 9. The SCB specimen was invented by Dr. Ken Chong (MAE). See: K. P. Chong and M. D. Kuruppu. “New Specimen for Fracture Toughness Determination for Brittle Materials,” International Journal of Fracture, Vol. 26, 1984, R59-R62. Dr. Kuruppu was his postdoc. The SCB specimen has been used widely around the world for brittle materials testing, and has been incorporated into testing standards like ASTM and ISRM.

The GWPA will host a set of career development talks with speakers who will advise postdocs on both industry and academic careers. This will be followed by a set of 10-minute presentations (TED talk style) by GW postdocs. Cash prizes will be awarded (1st = $300, 2nd = $200, 3rd = $100) for the best presentations. The deadline to submit topics for the presentations is September 10th.
