Combined Bachelor’s & Master's Programs

For qualified undergraduate students, the School of Engineering & Applied Science offers the combined “five-year” program as an option to complete a master’s degree within one calendar year upon graduation from their bachelor’s degree program.

Students enjoy several benefits* through completing a five-year program:

  • Discounted tuition rates (Grad2Grad Program)
  • Waived GRE requirement
  • Application fee waiver

*The combined five-year program and its benefits are exclusively for SEAS undergraduate students. If you are a non-SEAS undergraduate student at GW, please apply for a two-year master’s program by fulfilling all of the master’s program application requirements.

NOTE: If you are having issues creating an application using your GW email address, please contact us at [email protected].

Approved Five-Year Programs

The complete list of approved programs can be found on the Bulletin website.

    Minimum Qualifications to Apply

    • 3.0 overall GPA at the time of application AND upon graduation from the bachelor’s program.
    • Successful completion of junior year (typically 90 credit hours) at the time of application.
    • For students applying to programs with an MS in Cybersecurity or MS Computer Science, a technical GPA of 3.4.

Note: Applying to a five-year program does not guarantee admission. In certain circumstances, students who apply to the five-year program may instead be offered admission to the two year master's program. The faculty of each department maintains full discretion in approving or denying applicants for any reason, regardless of fulfillment of minimum qualifications.

Students who are pursuing a B.S/B.A. program in Computer Science and are applying to the MS in Computer Science or MS in Cybersecurity in Computer Science, must have a technical GPA of a minimum of 3.3. to be considered for admission to the program. Five-year program applicants without a computer science background must have a minimum 3.4 technical GPA in order to be considered for admission to the MS in Computer Science or MS in Cybersecurity in Computer Science programs.

    When to Apply

    • Priority deadline: July 1 (between junior and senior year)
    • Final deadline: November 1 (of senior year). No applications will be accepted from current seniors after November 1. No exceptions will be made.

To apply, follow the steps to fulfill the Combined Five-Year Program Application Requirements.

    How it Works

    • Upon successful completion their junior year (typically 90 credit hours), SEAS undergraduate students who have achieved an overall GPA of 3.0 should submit an application online for an approved five-year program. Once admitted and the offer is accepted, students can make an appointment with a SEAS Graduate Professional Advisor to discuss their graduate coursework plan, including which of their undergraduate courses can “double count” toward the master’s degree, and register for graduate-level courses while still enrolled as an undergraduate at GW.
    • Students are permitted to double-count a maximum of two courses (6 credit hours) at the 6000 level with a minimum grade of 3.0 (B) or better.

    Double-Counting Courses

Note: All double-counting requires advisor and department approval.
    Program Department Double-Counting Information
Biomedical Engineering Students to double-count TWO graduate-level courses
Civil & Environmental Engineering Students to double-count TWO graduate-level courses AND transfer* ONE graduate-level course
Computer Science Students to double-count TWO graduate-level courses
Electrical & Computer Engineering Students to double-count TWO graduate-level courses
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Students to double-count THREE graduate-level courses
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Students to double-count TWO graduate-level courses AND transfer* ONE graduate-level course
Data Analytics Students to double-count TWO graduate-level courses
