Dr. David Broniatowski (EMSE) and his colleagues recently published their findings on the anti-vaccination discourse on Facebook in this article in the American Journal of Public Health: D. A. Broniatowski, A. M. Jamison, N. F. Johnson, N. Velasquez, R. Leahy, N. Johnson Restrepo, M. Dredze, and S. C. Quinn. “Facebook Pages, the ‘Disneyland’ Measles Outbreak, and Promotion of Vaccine Refusal as a Civil Right, 2009–2019,” American Journal of Public Health, October 1, 2020. The authors found that the anti-vaccination discourse on Facebook increased in volume over the last decade, coalescing around the argument that refusing to vaccinate is a civil right.
Dr. Matthew Kay (BME) has published the following article: T. X. Phan, H. T. Ton, H. Gulyás, R. Pórszász, A. Tóth, R. Russo, M. W. Kay, N. Sahibzada, and G. P. Ahern. “TRPV1 expressed throughout the arterial circulation regulates vasoconstriction and blood pressure ,” The Journal of Physiology, September 17, 2020. This article presents new collaborative experiments to measure the vasomotor action of the capsaicin receptor, a key ion channel involved in inflammatory pain signaling, within the coronary vascular system. The study was led by Gerard Ahern, PhD at the Georgetown University Medical Center. Rebekah Russo, a BME master’s student mentored by Dr. Kay, conducted the coronary flow experiments presented in the manuscript.
Dr. Johan Rene van Dorp (EMSE) and his colleague Guillermina Jasso (New York University) are pleased to have been able to honor Drs. Samuel Kotz (1930-2010) and Norman Johnson (1917-2004), two pioneering scholars in the field of statistics and distribution theory, by publishing an entry for Dr. Kotz and an entry for Dr. Johnson in SAGE Research Methods platform. Dr. Kotz served as professor and research scholar at GW in the Operation Research Department and the Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Department from 1997 to 2010.
