Dr. Michael Keidar (MAE) and his students Xiaoliang Yao, Li Lin, Vikas Soni, Eda Gjika, and Dayun Yan have published the following paper: X. Yao, L. Lin, V. Soni, E. Gjika, J. H. Sherman, D. Yan, and M. Keidar. “Sensitization of Glioblastoma Cells to Temozolomide by A Helium Gas Discharge Tube,” Physics of Plasmas, Vol.27, Issue 11. This paper describes a novel method of the sensitization of cancer to chemotherapy and reduction of toxicity.
Dr. Taeyoung Lee (MAE) and his PhD student Weixin Wang have published the following paper: W. Wang and T. Lee, “Higher-order central moments of matrix Fisher distribution on SO(3),” Statistics and Probability Letters, Vol. 169.
Dr. Joost Santos (EMSE) recently published two journal articles on the coronavirus pandemic: J. R. Santos, “Using Input-Output Analysis to Model the Impact of Pandemic Mitigation and Suppression Measures on the Workforce,” Sustainable Production & Consumption, 23: 249-255; and 2) J. R. Santos, “Reflections on the Impact of ‘Flatten the Curve’ on Interdependent Workforce Sectors,” Environment Systems and Decisions, 40: 185–188.
Conferences & Presentations:
Dr. Michael Keidar (MAE) gave a keynote talk titled “Adaptive Plasmas and Recent Development in Biomedical Applications” at the 7th International Workshop on Plasma Science & Entrepreneurship. This online conference was hosted November 2-3 by the Plasma Institute in Bochum, Germany.
Other News:
Dr. Ken Chong (MAE) has been appointed as a member of the advisory board of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics, a monthly journal published by Springer. It is a comprehensive international journal presenting original research papers on mechanics, mathematical methods, and modeling in mechanics, as well as applied mathematics relevant to neoteric mechanics.
The Philippine American Academy of Science and Engineering has awarded Dr. Joost Santos (EMSE) the 2020 Severino and Paz Koh Lectureship in Engineering. The lecture is available on Youtube.
Other News
New course: Global & Experiential Education (G&EE) within the GW School of Business (GWSB) has partnered with Dr. Saniya LeBlanc (MAE) and Dr. Anna Helm (GWSB) to offer a new 3-credit course for the Spring 2021 term. The Global Business Project: International Business of Sustainable Energy course will bring together students from multiple disciplines to learn about energy technologies, international business, and global energy perspectives. Students will compare and contrast the energy perspectives of two countries, the United States and Sweden. After learning core energy and business topics, interdisciplinary teams of students will partner with real clients in Sweden to complete energy sector consulting projects. Students will work in teams to research new market opportunities for the firm's technology and propose their recommendations upon conclusion of the course. The course is open to undergraduate and graduate students within SEAS and GWSB. Students with a minor in sustainability are also encouraged to apply.

Engage: Engineering for Social Good: We are seeking second-year engineering undergraduate students to participate in an experimental one-credit social innovation course focusing on community engagement and creative problem-solving. The course will be offered Spring 2021, and financial assistance is available. Submit this Google form by Friday, November 20. If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Ekundayo Shittu or Dr. Erica Wortham. This course is part of a research project, “Service Learning Projects to Improve Engineering Students’ Civic Engagement and Capacity for Innovation,” which is funded by the National Science Foundation.
