Dr. David Broniatowski

On May 5, the American Journal of Public Health published two recent editorials written by Dr. David Broniatowski (EMSE) and colleagues: “‘First Do No Harm’: Effective Communication About COVID-19 Vaccines;” and “Why Debunking Misinformation Is Not Enough to Change People’s Minds About Vaccines.” The journal also published a conversation with Dr. Broniatowski in an accompanying podcast, “Is This the Vaccine Rollout Tipping Point?” On May 9, Dr. Broniatowski was quoted in the Boston Globe article “Pop-up sites, door-knocking are new tactics in quest to reach the unvaccinated.”

GW Today published an interview with Drs. Emilia Entcheva (BME) and Matthew Kay (BME) in the May 3 article, “SEAS Faculty Spotlight: A Decade of Developments in Cardiac Optogenetics.” The article also mentions a review written by Drs. Entcheva and Kay and recently published in Nature Reviews Cardiology that examines advancements made over the past 10 years—and discusses challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

Dr. Michael Keidar

Dr. Michael Keidar (MAE) gave an invited talk titled “Cold Atmospheric Plasma Devices for SARS-CoV-2 Disinfection” at the 64th annual SVC Tech Conference, held virtually, May 3-6.

Dr. Costis Toregas

Dr. Costis Toregas, director of the Cyber Security and Privacy Research Institute (CSPRI), has been invited to keynote the May 11 Military Cyber Professionals Association #3L Talks series. He will describe CSPRI’s role in strengthening military cybersecurity by managing the Cybersecurity Scholarship Program, as well as preparing a major dialogue—to be held May 25 in partnership with the SEAS Center for Women In Engineering—focused on female veterans and their entry into cybersecurity careers. Dr. Toregas will also promote a CSPRI monthly webinar initiative to encourage research at the intersection of blockchain and disaster risk reduction.

 

Student News

On April 24, MAE doctoral student Weixin Wang presented his research, “Bayesian Spacecraft Attitude Estimation with Large Uncertainties,” at the Student Research Competition organized by the Space and Satellite Professionals International (SSPI), and he received the “Best Example of Experimental Method” prize with a stipend. Weixin is advised by Dr. Taeyoung Lee (MAE).

 

ECE doctoral student Hao Zheng, supervised by Dr. Ahmed Louri (ECE), has accepted a tenure-track assistant professor position in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Central Florida, starting in Fall 2021. His research lies in the area of computer architecture with an emphasis on interconnection networks, machine learning techniques for efficient computing, and energy-efficient computer systems.

This is your chance to see the projects for computer graphics, computer animation, virtual reality, augmented reality, and computer games courses; hang out and mingle with other students and faculty; and celebrate together the end of an eventful year. You will also have the chance to vote for the winners of the various categories. The Festival will be held in the 3D virtual Science and Engineering Hall. You can participate through your computer terminal or using a VR head mounted display if you have one.
