Dr. Leila Farhadi’s (CEE) research and interests were featured in the December 4 article, “Professor Leila Farhadi – Remote Sensing & Computer Modelling: Understanding the Dynamic Water Cycle,” published in the space and earth issue of the science communication publication, Scientia.
Conferences & Presentations:
On December 2, Dr. David Broniatowski (EMSE) gave an invited presentation to the National Academies of Science Health and Medicine Division’s Board on Population Health & Public Health Practice’s annual board meeting. The presentation was titled “Weaponized Health Communication: Malicious Misinformation and Threats to Public Health.”
On November 22, Dr. Payman Dehghanian (ECE) gave an invited seminar at the College of Engineering Professional Development Seminar Series at the University of Alaska at Anchorage. Dr. Dehghanian presented the GW SmartGrid Lab’s research findings through a live presentation titled “Enhancing Power Grid Resilience and Online Situational Awareness to Black-Sky Hazards.”
Dr. Howie Huang (ECE) gave an invited talk at J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. on November 14. During his talk, titled “Graph-Centric Machine Learning: Algorithms, Systems, and Cybersecurity Applications,” Dr. Huang presented his Graph Computing Lab’s work on designing and developing high-performance graph systems and utilizing them for analyzing complex network data for cyber threat hunting. His talk was well attended and favorably received by JP Morgan's Global Cybersecurity team from multiple offices around the world.
Dr. Michael Plesniak (MAE) attended the 72nd annual meeting of the American Physical Society (APS) Division of Fluid Dynamics, held November 23-26 in Seattle, WA. He co-authored two presentations with his students and collaborators, including Dr. Kartik Bulusu (MAE) and Dr. L. Patricia Hernandez (Biology), MAE Ph.D. alumnus Christopher Cox, and undergraduate researcher Samantha Racan: 1) “P32.00005: Characterization of mucus macro-rheology from the silver carp, \textit{Hypophthalmichthys molitrix};” and 2) “ P12.00002 Three-dimensional Vortical Structures in a Curved Pipe under Fully Developed Pulsatile Inflow.” Dr. Plesniak also presented an update on plans for GW to host the conference in DC in 2023 to the Division of Fluid Dynamics Executive Committee, which held its annual business meeting during the conference.
Dr. Kausik Sarkar (MAE) and his doctoral student Abhilash Reddy Malipeddy attended the 72nd Annual meeting of the Division of Fluid Dynamics of the American Physical Society, held November 23-26 in Seattle, WA. There, they presented the talk “B07.00003: Shear induced gradient diffusivity of red blood cell suspensions.”
Other News:
Dr. Adam Aviv (CS) organized two recent events hosted by the CS Department. On December 5, the department hosted the DC-Area Anonymity, Privacy, and Security Seminar(DCAPS), which brought together security and privacy experts from throughout the DC area (and beyond) to present on new research projects. The following day, the department hosted the NDSS 2020 Program Committee meeting. It was attended by some of the top security and privacy researchers nationally and internationally to discuss forming the program for the Network and Distributed System Security Symposium (NDSS), one of the top conferences in computer security.
Dr. Rumana Riffat (CEE) took her undergraduate students on a field trip to the Arlington Water Pollution Control Plant in Arlington, VA on November 18. The students received a tour of the plant and learned about the various advanced treatment processes that are used. Equalization tanks for storm water retention, nutrient removal, and production of Class B biosolids from sludge were important learning aspects of the tour.

Increasingly, successful research projects require collaboration across disciplines and between institutions. These collaborations benefit from diverse expertise and perspectives and ensure the efficient use of time and other resources. This session will cover key points in establishing collaborative relationships, the nature and advantages of successful collaborations, dealing with challenges, and the role of institutions in collaborative science. The discussion will be led by Dr. Kathleen Griffith, associate professor of medicine and member of the GW Cancer Center, and Dr. Keith Crandall, director of the Computational Biology Institute.
