Research:
Prof. Erica Gralla (EMSE) has received a two-year, $147,150 National Science Foundation grant for her project "Collaborative Research: Observing, Analyzing, and Modeling Design Team Problem Decompositions in Facility Design." Working under the grant, she and her co-PI, Jeffrey Herrmann of the University of Maryland, will investigate how engineers decompose and solve facility design problems. They will observe teams of industrial engineers as they redesign a manufacturing facility, and then model their strategies to determine better problem decompositions and design processes.
Carl Landwehr, the lead research scientist for GW's Cyber Security Policy and Research Institute, has received a $49,056 award from the National Science Foundation for a workshop on creating a building code for medical device software security.
Prof. Volker Sorger (ECE) has received a three-year, $750,331 grant from the National Science Foundation. The grant, titled "Theory-Enabled Development of 2D Metal Dichalcogenides as Active Elements of On-Chip Silicon-Integrated Optical Communication," was solicited as part of Designing Materials to Revolutionize and Engineer our Future (DMREF), which links to the President's Materials Genome Initiative (MGI). On this grant GW joins forces with Stanford University and University of California, Riverside.

Conferences & Presentations:
Prof. Leila Farhadi (CEE) has been invited to be a keynote speaker at the 6th International Workshop on Catchment Hydrological Modeling and Data Assimilation, which will be held September 8-12 at University of Texas Austin, September 8-12. The title of Prof. Farhadi's talk will be "Development of Data Assimilation Techniques for Hydrological Applications."
On September 4, Prof. Shelly Heller (CS) will give a paper presentation based on her Fulbright research at the 8th European Conference on Gender Equality in Higher Education. The conference will be held in Vienna, Austria. The title of Prof. Heller's presentation will be "The Status of Slovenian Women in Science."
Prof. Zhenyu Li (BME) gave an invited talk titled "A Handheld Point-of-Care Medical Tricorder and Wearable Lab-on-a-Chip Systems Based on Novel Microfluidics" at the Sixth Annual Next Generation Dx Summit, held August 19-21 here in Washington, DC. This event has become the meeting place for major players in medical diagnostics to showcase advances in personalized medicine through a comprehensive program encompassing companion diagnostics, infectious disease, cancer molecular markers, point-of-care, inherited disorders, cell-free DNA and single-cell sequencing.
Prof. Michael Plesniak (MAE) attended the 4th International Conference on Experimental Fluid Mechanics, held August 12-15 in Beijing, China. He was a member of the international scientific committee that organized the conference. Prof. Plesniak chaired the Friday invited keynote lecture session, which included a presentation by editor-in-chief of Experiments in Fluids, Prof. Cameron Tropea. Prof. Plesniak also made a presentation titled "In plastico investigation of flow rate & pressure phase shifts toward understanding of arterial secondary flow structure dynamics," co-authored with MAE Research Assistant Professor Kartik Bulusu.

Prof. Megan Leftwich (MAE) attended the 4th International Conference on Experimental Fluid Mechanics, held August 12-15 in Beijing, China, where she presented the paper "The Phase-averaged wake of a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine." The paper was co-authored with MAE student Colin Parker and MAE alumna Danielle Barsky (MS '14). For the paper and presentation, Prof. Leftwich was awarded the conference's Young Researcher Award.
On August 20, Prof. Julie Ryan (EMSE) hosted five representatives from Pakistan's National University of Science and Technology (NUST) for a roundtable discussion on cyber security issues and cyber confidence building measures. The participants included three graduate students; their professor, Prof. Abdul Ghafoor; and Prof. Tughral Yamin, associate dean of the Center for International Peace and Stability (CIPS). Before coming to DC to talk to policy experts about how they view cyber issues, the group also spent a week at Sandia National Laboratories learning about technical methodologies for assessing threats and a week at the Monterey Institute for International Studies (MIIS) learning about cyber policy. As a result of the meeting, the group agreed to continue collaborating, particularly in cooperative research and educational efforts.

Hatem ElBidweihy, a recent Ph.D. graduate of Prof. Edward Della Torre (ECE) and GW's Institute for Magnetics Research (IMR), has been selected as a winner of the 2014 Chorafas Foundation Award for his doctoral research on coupled magnetic phenomena. The Swiss-based Chorafas Foundation gives scientific awards to doctoral students worldwide who are under 30 at the time of application and are doing outstanding dissertation research in selected fields of life sciences and/or sustainability. The goal of the award is to reward exceptional research performance and to encourage significant future contributions to practical, applied science fields. Dr. ElBidweihy is currently a tenure-track assistant professor at the United States Naval Academy.
On August 25, SEAS signed an MOU with the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) to provide educational opportunities for SEC employees through the ECE Department. The program is scheduled to begin in 2015.
