Research & Grants:
Dr. Russell Hemley (CEE) was awarded $555,661 from the Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) for research, training, and management of the Capital/DOE Alliance Center (CDAC) through February 28, 2018. CDAC is a Center of Excellence for Materials Science funded by the Stewardship Science Academic Alliances Program of the DOE/NNSA. Dr. Hemley is the director of CDAC, which comprises research groups at 15 other academic institutions and five DOE national laboratories.

Dr. Lijie Grace Zhang (MAE), Dr. Michael Keidar (MAE), their studentsHaitao Cui, Wei Zhu, andAnnie Talbot, and post-doctoral scientist Dayun Yanhave published the following paper: D. Yan, H. Cui, W. Dr. James Lee (MAE) served as the volume editor of International Journal of Terraspace Science and Engineering, Volume 9, Issue 1. In this volume, he and his colleague Dr. Azim Eskandarian; his former students, Dr. Jiaoyan Li and Dr. Zidong Yang; and his doctoral student Kerlin P. Robert published the following three papers: 1) K. P. Robert, J. Li, and J. D. Lee. “Simulation of tumor growth;” 2) K. P. Robert, J. Li, and J. D. Lee. “Finite element analysis of 4D printing;” and 3) Z. Yang, J. D. Lee, and A. Eskandarian. “Non-equilibrium molecular dynamics in electromagnetic field.”
Other News:
On September 6, Dr. Poorvi Vora (CS) gave invited testimony on the topic of election cybersecurity at a (rare) joint hearing of the Maryland State House Ways and Means Committee and the Maryland Senate Education, Health, and Environmental Affairs Committee.
Dr. Volker Sorger (ECE) received the First Place poster presentation award at the 14th US-Korea Forum on Nanotechnology, hosted by the National Science Foundation and the Korea Ministry of Science, held September 11-12 in Washington, D.C. His poster was titled “Atto-Joule Nanophotonics and Photonic Neuromorphic Computing.”

Team Marisol Design EWB Design
Congratulations to Team Marisol and Engineers Without Borders, the winner and runner-up, respectively, of the GW ChargedUp Solar Design Competition. The competition, which was sponsored by the GW Office of Sustainability, invited student innovators to design a campus solar charging station. GW Division of Operations will work closely with Team Marisol to install the unit on Kogan Plaza. The university will look for an additional location on campus to place the design submitted by Engineers Without Borders.
SEAS students on Team Marisol include: Ali Ahmed, Khalid Alsadhan, Eric Andus, Juliana Curry, Jacari Matthews, Danny Oler, Aaron Patron, Zachary Switzer, Sanjin Terzic, and Feng (Jason) Xiang. The Engineers Without Borders team comprised SEAS students Michaela Altland, Jaclyn Bellefeuille, Isabella Johnson, Trevor McCarney, Kristin Melling, Shea Metzgar, Caven Montel, Gabrielle Parkhill, and Matthew Shaeffer.
SEAS Computing Facility
MATLAB and SOLIDWORKS workshops and tutoring: SEAS Computing Facility will hold a series of workshops covering MATLAB and Solidworks programming through the fall semester. The workshops will be held on Fridays from 2:00 to 4:00 pm in Tompkins 405.
MATLAB:
MATLAB (matrix laboratory) is a multi-paradigm numerical computing environment and fourth-generation programming language used in various backgrounds of engineering, science, and economics. These workshops will cover the fundamentals of MATLAB programming.

Solidworks:
SolidWorks is a solid modeling computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided engineering (CAE) computer program that enables engineers and architects to design, inspect, and manage engineering projects within an integrated graphical user interface. Through these workshops you will learn how to navigate the Soldiworks interface, create sketches, set up parametric relations, and create 3D models. You will create the different parts of a V6 internal combustion engine from scratch, assemble it, and see it come to life.

MATLAB and Solidworks tutoring will be offered throughout the fall semesterin Tompkins 401 on the following days:
- Wednesdays: 12:00 – 5:00 pm
- Thursdays: 12:00 – 3:30 pm
- Fridays: 4:00 – 6:00 pm

CubeSat Information Meeting

GW is building the satellite for the CubeSat that is scheduled to be launched in 2019. This will be GW's first CubeSat, and possibly the first one launched by any Washington, D.C. entity (excluding NASA). GW is partnering on the project with the U.S. Naval Academy and the TEC University in Costa Rica. TEC University is responsible for the scientific mission, on which GW will also collaborate. The GW CubeSat team is looking for both undergraduate and graduate students from various departments, particularly from the CS department. Students may apply for different job positions that the Cubesat team will post on Handshake after the information session. Faculty also are invited to attend. VentureWell Programs:
Faculty Grants: VentureWell is seeking proposals for areas that will support the emerging generation of inventors and innovators and the innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystems critical to their success. VentureWell provides grants of up to $30,000 to help fund and support faculty with innovative ideas to create new (or transform existing) courses and programs to help students develop novel, STEM-based inventions and gain the necessary entrepreneurial skills needed to bring these ideas to market. Applications are due November 8.
