SEAS congratulates Mr. Christopher Wiernicki (MS ’83) on his election to the U.S. National Academy of Engineering (NAE). Mr. Wiernicki was elected for his innovative leadership in the design, engineering, and operation of ships and offshore structures.

Mr. Wiernicki is an internationally recognized business leader and naval architect in the maritime and offshore energy sectors, and he currently serves as chairman, president, and CEO of the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). He has been a leading voice on a number of issues impacting the marine and offshore industry, including modernizing maritime safety through the use of risk-based methodologies. His approach to management is to use his understanding of engineering, technology, and business fundamentals to stimulate growth and increase stakeholder value.

“As an engineer leading a global organization committed to excellence in all aspects of marine and offshore operations, it is a tremendous and humbling honor to be recognized for innovation,” said Mr. Wiernicki. “Engineering plays a pivotal role in the ABS mission to make the oceans safer and in the significant industry advances we have delivered.”

Election to the NAE is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to engineering research, practice, or education and to the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education.
