Danmeng Shuai

Congratulations to Dr. Danmeng Shuai, Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at GW, on being selected for The American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists’ (AAEES) 40 Under 40 Recognition Program! This program recognizes talented individuals who have, either personally or as part of a team, been responsible for helping to advance the fields of Environmental Science or Environmental Engineering in a demonstrable way within the last 12 months.

As a high school student, Shuai was very interested in chemistry and biology and always wanted to pursue a career related to those fields. So before choosing a college major, Shuai said he wanted to do something more practical and engineering oriented. Enter environmental engineering, which he then chose because he believed his enthusiasm, interest, and expertise could tackle the challenges in environmental pollution and sustainable development of our society.

Shuai is doing exactly that in his research at GW. He is currently working on developing advanced materials for environmental remediation, renewable energy production, and public health protection. He also teaches and mentors both undergraduates and graduates who will follow in his footsteps to become future leaders in environmental engineering. Shuai said he loves the mentorship part of being a professor because he is happy to see his students become successful and contribute to the field of environmental engineering. His research and mentorship is what made him a stand-out choice to AAEES to be recognized in this program.

“I am very fortunate to receive this award and it is a recognition of myself and those who supported and helped me in the past, including my family and friends, my mentors, my students, and my collaborators. I also thank GW for providing me with an excellent platform where I can do cool research and teach and mentor young talents. I will continue my work in environmental engineering to achieve excellence," Shuai said.
