Dr. Lorena Barba (MAE) and her doctoral student Olivier Mesnard published the paper "Reproducible workflow on a public cloud for computational fluid dynamics” in IEEE Computing in Science and Engineering.
Dr. Michael Keidar (MAE) and his graduate students and post-doctoral student have published the following paper: D. B. Zolotuchin, K. P. Daniels, S. R. P. Bandaru and M. Conferences & Presentations:
On September 24, Dr. Lorena Barba (MAE) led the panel “Reproducibility: What Is Needed to Enable Computational Reproducibility?” at the National Academy of Science (NAS). It was one among four invited panels of the symposium “Reproducibility and Replicability in Science: Next Steps.” In attendance (among many distinguished scholars) were Dr. France Cordova, National Science Foundation director; Marcia McNutt, NAS president; Harvey Fineberg, president of the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation; and Kelvin Droegemeier, director, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
Dr. David Broniatowski (EMSE) was an invited panelist at the Center for Strategic and International Studies Panel on Restoring Trust in Vaccines at the CSIS Conference on Global Immunization. The panel was held September 28.
Dr. James Lee (MAE) and his past and present students, Dr. Jiaoyan Li and Kerlin Robert, presented “Finite Element Analysis of 4D Printing” at the 2019 International Conference on Biomechanics and Medical Engineering, held September 19-22 in San Diego, CA. At the same conference, his Ph.D. student Hao Sun presented their work “Experimental and Theoretical Studies of Tumor Growth.” The work introduces a mathematical model to simulate the tumor growth and deformation process, incorporating the experimental data from Dr. Lijie Grace Zhang's Ph.D. student Timothy Esworthy.
On October 3, Dr. Michael Plesniak (MAE) presented an invited seminar titled “Physiologically-inspired Pulsatile Flow over a Surface Protuberance” as part of the Engineering Leadership series in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University at Buffalo.

EMSE Visiting Scholar Scott Sklar was quoted in the October 1 Washington Business Journal article “Amazon will update HQ2 design to meet Jeff Bezos’ climate goals.” The article covers Amazon’s plan to eliminate carbon dioxide emissions from its upcoming massive headquarters in Arlington County. This is part of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos’ announcement last week to end the company's reliance on fossil fuels in a decade. Dr. Sklar is the director of renewable energy for the SEAS Environmental and Energy Management Institute.
Other News:
On October 1, the SEAS Environmental and Energy Management Institute held a preview screening of the global climate change film “Tidewater” in the Lehman Auditorium. Dr. Jonathan Deason (EMSE) gave a welcome address and Research Professor Joe Cascio (EMSE) coordinated a discussion panel consisting of Melissa Deas, climate program analyst, Government of the District of Columbia; Dr. Stephen Dornbos, AAAS science and technology policy fellow, US Department of Defense; Kristiane Huber, resilience fellow, Center for Climate and Energy Solutions; and Shana Udvardy, climate resilience analyst, Union of Concerned Scientists. The American Society of Adaptation Professionals co-hosted the event and provided dinner for the attendees.
Dr. Rachael Jonassen (climate change director, EEMI) completed her first mission to Xiangtan, China, September 22-28, for the Asian Development Bank. She leads a team designing a roughly $500 million low carbon transformation for the city of Xiangtan. Xiangtan is a heavily polluted industrial city whose carbon emissions have doubled in the past 10 years. The ADB team consists of 42 international and national experts in fields such as distributed energy, district heating, waste-to-energy, intelligent transport systems, smart energy building design, and green public finance. Eight GW graduate students support the project. Dr. Jonassen also is one of sixty-four signatories of the Climate and Security Advisory Group (CSAG), which released “A Climate Security Plan for America” on September 24. The plan calls on the U.S. President to recognize climate change as a vital national security threat and issue a national strategy to fulfill a “responsibility to prepare for and prevent” that threat. CSAG is chaired by the Center for Climate and Security in partnership with GW's Elliott School of International Affairs.
Dr. Shelly Heller (CS) presented “What’s Your Why” on a panel at the 2019 Grace Hopper Conference. SEAS is an academic sponsor of this conference for women in technology. This year SEAS/CS sent 11 women to join over 25,000 other students and young professionals at this annual conference. By comparison, the first Grace Hopper Conference, which was held in 1994, was attended by 500 technical women.

Increasingly, government contractors are teaming with academia on complex cross-disciplinary research projects. GW faculty are well-suited to join these teams as principal investigators and subject matter experts. In turn, faculty make valuable professional connections and build skills and expertise that will benefit their own academic and research programs. Panelists, including leading government contractors and GW researchers, will discuss lessons learned from recent collaborations, provide tips for working with government contractors and consultants, and explain how their organizations partner on large research proposals. This event is organized by the Office of Industry and Corporate Research within the Office of the Vice President for Research.
