Prof. Tarek El-Ghazawi (ECE) was quoted in "China Builds World's Fastest Supercomputer," an article published in the November 15 issue of IEEE Spectrum.
Awards & Honors:
At its November 2010 meeting, the IEEE Board of Directors elevated Prof. Tarek El-Ghazawi (ECE) to IEEE Fellow, effective January 1, 2011, with the citation, "for contributions to reconfigurable computing and parallel programming."
Prof. Rahul Simha (CS) was named the Professor of the Year for the District of Columbia by CASE (Council for Advancement and Support of Education) and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. This awards program is the only national program that recognizes excellence in undergraduate teaching and mentoring. Congratulations to Prof. Simha.
Papers:
Prof. Chunlei Liang (MAE) and his colleagues at Stanford University and Iowa State University published the following paper: Chunlei Liang, K. Ou, S. Premasuthan, A. Jameson and Z. J. Wang. Prof. Pinhas Ben-Tzvi (MAE) and his graduate students published three papers at the 2010 ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition (IMECE 2010), which took place in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, November 12-18. The papers are:

Prof. Ben-Tzvi was also the organizer of the technical sessions "Robot Control" and "Robot Control II" under the "Symposium on Dynamics and Control of Mechanisms and Robots" at the same conference.
Prof. Johan Rene van Dorp (EMSE) presented his paper, "A Bayesian Expert Judgment-based Maritime Accident Probability Model," and Prof. Thomas Mazzuchi (EMSE) his paper, "A Bayesian Expert Judgment Model to Determine Life Time Distributions for Maintenance Optimization," at the INFORMS 2010 Annual Conference "Energizing the Future" in Austin, TX, on November 8 in a session entitled "Bayesian Modeling in Reliability and Risk" organized by Prof. Refik Soyer. Prof. Soyer is the director of the Institute for Integrating Statistics in Decision Sciences (I2SDS), housed in the Department of Decision Sciences of the GW School of Business. The I²SDS was chartered in 2007 to foster the integration of modern statistical methodologies into decision science, and it is an academic collaborative partnership between the Department of Statistics of the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering of SEAS.
Other:
The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) have invited Prof. Pinhas Ben-Tzvi (MAE) to serve on the mechanical engineering panel for the 2011 NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program.
Prof. Michael Plesniak (MAE chair) was elected for a three-year term to the Executive Committee of the American Physical Society Division of Fluid Dynamics (DFD). Prof. Plesniak is a Fellow of APS, and for more than 20 years has been actively involved in DFD activities through service on various committees, including the Fluid Dynamics Prize Selection Committee, the External Affairs Committee (Chair 2009), the ad hoc Committee on Cyber Fluid Dynamics, and the ad hoc Committee on Media and Public Relations.
Student News
EMSE doctoral candidate Christyl Johnson has been named NASA's new deputy center director for science and technology. In her new post at Goddard, Christyl will manage the research and development portfolio and will be responsible for formulating the Center's future science and technology goals and leading an integrated program of investments aligned to meet those goals.
Other News
The SEAS 5th Annual Student Research & Development Showcase will be held during Engineers Week this year (on Wednesday, February 23), and all SEAS students - graduate and undergraduate - are invited to participate.
Prizes for the Showcase are as follows:
- 1st Place-$5,000
- 2nd Place-$4,000
- 3rd Place-$3,000
In addition, mentors of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners will each receive $1,000 to be used toward research.
Prize winners will attend a VIP reception following the event. They will also show their research at the Business Alliance's Mid-Atlantic Innovation Showcase in April 2011.

Prof. Jonathan Deason chaired the Council on Environmental Quality-GW GreenGov session "Federal Greenhouse Gas Reporting and Metrics," conducted on October 5. The session was extremely popular, with well more than 150 people packed into a room designed to hold only 100 participants, and more spilling out into the hallway. The popularity was due to new requirements being imposed on the private and public sectors for greenhouse gas emissions reporting and the fact that we assembled probably the four most knowledgeable people available on this topic.
The speakers and topics included:
- Horst Greczmiel, associate director at the Council on Environmental Quality, discussed the forthcoming National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) greenhouse gas (GHG) guidance that will address the issue of how GHG emissions are to be operated into NEPA compliance processes, including the intersection between the draft NEPA guidance and federal GHG reporting requirements.
- Leslie Gillespie-Marthaler, senior program manager at the Council on Environmental Quality, explained Executive Order 13514 and the federal guidance to implement it, including the federal GHG reporting protocol and where we are in the process.
- Katherine Sibold, manager, Integrated Program Strategies Program, Division of Climate Change, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, discussed the new federal Mandatory Reporting Rule that will require all facilities emitting more than 25,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent to report such emissions (estimated to be more than 10,000 facilities nationwide).
- Mary Sotos, World Resources Institute and co-author of the new GHG Protocol for the U.S. Public Sector, discussed the recently issued public sector protocol in which the World Resources Institute has been heavily involved.
