Prof. Michael Keidar (MAE), together with Prof. Mary Ann Stepp (GW Medical School) and students Olga Volotskova and post-doc Alex Shashurin, published a paper in the inaugural issue of Plasma Medicine journal. Conferences & Presentations:
On September 6, Prof. Tarek El-Ghazawi (ECE) delivered the keynote address at the FPGA World Conference, which was held in Copenhagen, Denmark. The conference was co-sponsored by ACM and industry. The title of Prof. El-Ghazawi's speech was "Computing with FPGAs: Where does it stand and what is next?"

CEE graduate students Rekha Hareendran and Nazia Salam are this year's winners of the Water Environment Federation's student paper competition (masters division) for their paper "A Study of Denitrification Kinetics of Methanol Utilizing Organisms at Wastewater Treatment Plants in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed." They will be awarded a certificate and $500, and will participate in the poster symposium at the annual conference WEFTEC in New Orleans in October. The paper is based on their master's thesis research conducted with the supervision of Prof. Rumana Riffat (CEE).
Brenton Duffy, an MAE graduate student, has been selected to receive a $3,000 scholarship from the Society of Satellite Professionals International (SSPI). The scholarship is awarded to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing courses in the satellite, aerospace and allied technologies. Brenton will be invited to an SSPI reception later this fall here in Washington.
Yaolin Liu, a doctoral student of Prof. Baoxia Mi (CEE), gave an oral presentation entitled "Combined Organic and Inorganic Fouling of Forward Osmosis Membranes" at the 25th Annual WateReuse Symposium, Washington, DC, September 12-15.
Syed Azeem, an EMSE doctoral student, is featured in a video produced by Gates Millennium Scholars, a program funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. In this video, he speaks about being an engineer and an engineering student.
Christopher Howard, a CS doctoral student, has been awarded the ISSA-NoVA tuition scholarship for academic year 2010-2011. The scholarship, made possible by a generous contribution of $5,000 from the Information Systems Security Association-Northern Virginia Chapter and a matching contribution by GW, is awarded each year to an outstanding graduate student in computer science whose work focuses on the area of computer security and information assurance. SEAS Entrepreneurs' Club: Join us for the first meeting of the Entrepreneurs' Club of SEAS. The first meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 28 at 5:00 pm in the Tompkins Hall Lobby. Come participate in discussions and a Q&A session with successful entrepreneurs Doug Humphrey and SEAS' own Randy Graves. The session includes a pizza buffet.
The GW Institute for Biomedical Engineering (GWIBE) announces its call for proposals from GW faculty who are interested in biomedical engineering research support from GWIBE. Proposals are due to Prof. James Hahn, 720B Academic Center, 202-994-5920, [email protected], by 5:00 pm, Friday, October 1. Electronic submissions are required.

Prof. Chunlei Liang joined SEAS last month and has been working to build momentum in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) research at GW and in international and domestic collaborations in CFD research. Within SEAS, Prof. Liang is collaborating with Prof. Charles Garris (MAE) on modeling supersonic crypto-flow pressure exchange, and he has started discussions with Prof. James Lee (MAE) on extending micropolar theory to model fluid mechanics problems.
As for external collaborations, on August 11, Prof. Liang welcomed his first visitor to the MAE department, Chinese academician Prof. Wenquan Tao, a world-renowned CFD expert in enhanced heat transfer and also the president of Xi'an Jiaotong Liverpool University. On September 14, he welcomed Prof. Max Platzer, an adjunct professor at the University of California Davis, who gave a seminar on aerohydronautical power engineering. In June, prior to his arrival at GW, Prof. Liang began working in collaboration with University of Michigan professor Michael Bernitsason modeling a renewable ocean energy harvesting device named Vortex Induced Vibration Aquatic Clean Energy (VIVACE).
