Other News:
Prof. Ken Chong (MAE) was invited to participate in the U.S. National Committee for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics 2015 Annual Meeting, held May 1 at the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). Workshops on additive manufacturing and material systems were discussed, and presentations by a member of the NAS Board of Directors and various federal agencies—including one by the NSF assistant director for engineering—were made during the daylong meeting.
Brookhaven National Laboratory of the Department of Energy is now a collaborator of GW’s Institute for Magnetics Research (IMR), directed by Profs. Edward Della Torre and Lawrence Bennett (ECE). Postdoctoral fellow Mohammadreza Ghahremani and Amir Aslani, a Ph.D. candidate at IMR, are conducting cutting-edge research on the usage of nanostructure materials in magnetic refrigeration systems. Their recent work on optimizing magnetic refrigeration systems won first prize in GW Research Day 2015. The IMR team expects the results of this research to lead to the development of better refrigerants and permit the design of more efficient, high performance, and commercially feasible magnetic refrigeration systems.
Prof. Howie Huang (ECE) has received a 2015 Tsinghua University Global Scholar Fellowship. This annual fellowship invites outstanding international researchers to visit and conduct collaborative research at Tsinghua University. This year, 17 awardees received the fellowships.
Prof. Joost Santos (EMSE) served as a visiting professor at the University of the Philippines from April 25 to May 12. During his stay, he presented a series of seminars to several universities on topics pertaining to critical infrastructure protection and disaster risk management. These seminars also resulted in meetings that involved disaster preparedness and economic/statistical agencies. He also discussed the extent to which ongoing collaborations between GW and Philippine institutions could be further strengthened.

Prof. Thomas Mazzuchi (EMSE) hosted the annual Systems Engineering Junior-Senior picnic at his home on May 3. Approximately 40 students and faculty attended.
On April 23, the University’s Advisory Council on Research (SACR) unanimously approved a five-year charter for the new Environmental and Energy Management Institute (EEMI), which is headquartered within SEAS. The EEMI is housed in Rooms 103 and 104 on the first floor of Tompkins Hall.
