Research:
Prof. Volker Sorger (ECE) has received a $50,000 National Science Foundation grant titled “2D Materials for Heat Management.” The grant gives his team access to the winter NSF I-Corps cohort.
Publications:
Prof. Lorena Barba (MAE) and her former Ph.D. student have published the following journal article: C. D. Cooper and L. A. Barba. “Poisson–Boltzmann model for protein-surface electrostatic interactions and grid-convergence study using the PyGBe code,” Computer Physics Communications, DOI: 10.1016/j.cpc.2015.12.019.
Profs. Larry Bennett and Edward Della Torre (ECE) and their collaborators have published the following paper: A. Siddique, S. Gu, R. Witte, M. Ghahremani, C. A. Nwokoye, A. Aslani, R. Kruk, V. Provenzano, L. H. Bennett, and E. Della Torre. “Electric-field controlled magnetization switching in Co/Pt thin-film ferromagnets,” Cogent Physics, 3: 1139435 (2016). The results are envisaged to lead to faster and ultra-low-power magnetization switching as compared to spin-transfer torque (STT) switching in spintronic devices.
Prof. Kausik Sarkar (MAE) and his doctoral student Mr. Lang Xia, in collaboration with Prof. Tyrone Porter (Boston University), have published the following peer-reviewed journal paper: X. Lang, T. M. Porter, and K. Sarkar. “Interpreting attenuation at different excitation amplitudes to estimate strain-dependent interfacial rheological properties of lipid-coated monodisperse microbubbles,” Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 138, 624-634. It resulted from a collaboratively linked project funded by a National Science Foundation proposal directed by Profs. Sarkar and Porter.
Prof. Ekundayo Shittu (EMSE) has published the following paper: X. Jiang, G. Parker, and E. Shittu. “Envelope Modeling of Renewable Resource Variability and Capacity,” Computers & Operations Research , Vol. 66, February 2016, pp. 272-283. doi:10.1016/j.cor.2015.07.020.
Other News:
Prof. Lorena Barba (MAE) has been named a Visiting Scholar at the Berkeley Institute of Data Science.
Dr. Bereket Tanju (adjunct faculty, EMSE Off-Campus Programs) has been appointed the deputy chief data officer at the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Federal Student Aid. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Tanju served in a variety of research, engineering, and acquisition positions for the Department of the Navy.
