Publications:
Prof. David Broniatowski (EMSE) and his colleagues have published the following paper: D. Broniatowski, K. Hilyard, and M. Dredze. “Effective vaccine communication during the Disneyland outbreak,” Vaccine, doi:10.1016/j.vaccine.2016.04.044. The paper was featured in the May 13 Medical News Today article, “What the Disneyland measles outbreak of 2014-15 can teach us about how stories go viral.”
Prof. Emilia Entcheva (BME), her Ph.D. student Aleksandra Klimas, and her co-authors have published the following article: A. Klimas, C. M. Ambrosi, J. Yu, J. C. Williams, H. Bien, and E. Entcheva. “OptoDyCE as an automated system for high-throughput all-optical dynamic cardiac electrophysiology,” Nature Communications, doi:10.1038/ncomms11542.
Prof. James Lee (MAE) and his former students, Dr. Leyu Wang and Dr. Jiaoyan Li, have published the following journal paper: L. Wang, J. Li, and J. Conferences & Presentations:
Prof. Ken Chong (MAE) delivered the opening keynote at the plenary session of the International Sustainability Conference (SCC 2016), which is being held May 15-18 in Washington, DC. His talk was titled “Infrastructure Materials: Mechanics and Sustainability, from Nano to the Continuum.”
Prof. Erica Gralla (EMSE) organized a successful one-day conference on May 5, preceding the Production and Operations Management Society Annual Meeting, held in Orlando, FL. In her role as vice president for meetings for the POMS College of Humanitarian Operations and Crisis Management, she organized the “mini-conference,” consisting of talks and panels that blend academic research and operations practice. It was attended by 48 people from universities across the U.S. and the world. In addition, she and her student, Azrah Azhar, presented a talk titled “Transportation Networks for Humanitarian Aid: Test Cases and Analysis of Historical Disaster Scenarios.”
Dr. Rachael Jonassen (EMSE and CPS, visiting scholar and part-time faculty) presented the lead-off talk on the topic “What’s the Target? And Why?” at a May 4 workshop on science-based targets for greenhouse gas reduction sponsored by the Global Environmental Management Initiative.

Profs. Saniya LeBlanc (MAE), Volker Sorger (ECE), and Ekundayo Shittu (EMSE) are actively promoting the results of their NSF-funded, interdisciplinary Nanotechnology Fellows Program. Prof. LeBlanc presented a paper titled “Nanotechnology Fellows Program: An Interdisciplinary Practicum for Nanotechnology Undergraduate Education” at the NSF-AAAS Envisioning the Future of Undergraduate STEM Education: Research and Practice Symposium, held April 28 in Washington, DC. Prof. LeBlanc will speak about human infrastructure for nanotechnology as an invited panelist at the 2016 National Nanotechnology Initiative Strategic Planning Stakeholder Workshop. And Profs. LeBlanc and Shittu will present the paper “Nanotechnology Fellows Program: Preparing Undergraduate Students for Careers in Nanotechnology” at the national American Society for Engineering Education Annual Conference & Exposition, to be held June 27 in New Orleans, LA. The second cohort of the Nanotechnology Fellows Program will be in session May 23-July 15; it includes students from MAE, ECE, EMSE, BME, CEE, and CS.

Congratulations to Dor Hirsh Bar Gai (EMSE), who received his B.S. degree last weekend and has been named a 2016 GW Presidential Administrative Fellow. Dor will work in the Office of Undergraduate Student Services, where he also will serve as the SEAS Dean’s Fellow.
