Awards & Honors

Prof. Lance Hoffman (CS and CSPRI) was inducted to the Cyber Security Hall of Fame in a ceremony held October 20 in Baltimore, MD. Prof. Hoffman’s success in developing the nation’s first regularly offered university course on computer security was cited, as were his authorship/editorship of books on the state of cyber security and privacy, and his research on cryptography policy, risk analysis, and statistical inference for data mining. More information on Prof. Hoffman and the other 2016 inductees is available on the National Cyber Security Hall of Fame website.

Media Mentions:

C-SPAN recently aired a congressional debate between candidates for Virginia’s 10th District, at which Congresswoman Barbara Comstock (R-VA 10th District) mentioned people working on “new technology like we have at George Washington University” to relieve traffic congestion. Her comment referred to research conducted by Prof. Samer Hamdar’s (CEE) lab. Congresswoman Comstock had previously visited Prof. Hamdar’s instrumented vehicle lab at the Virginia Science and Technology Campus and was impressed by their work on congestion mitigation, connected and automated vehicles, driver and pedestrian behavior modeling, and traffic safety. Conferences & Presentations:

Prof. Lance Hoffman (CS and CSPRI) spoke on October 17 at the U. S. Naval Academy’s “Developing a Normative Framework for Cyberwarfare” workshop. The title of his presentation was “Teaching Cyberwarfare Ethics: Challenges and Opportunities.”

Prof. Claire Monteleoni (CS) will serve as an invited panelist on the Data Modeling & Analytics panel at the Big Data in Finance conference, which will take place in Ann Arbor, MI on October 27 and 28. The conference is hosted by the U.S. Department of Treasury’s Office of Financial Research and by the University of Michigan’s Center on Finance, Law and Policy.

Student News

The Metropolitan Washington Chapter of ARCS (Achievement Rewards for College Scientists) held its 2016 Scholar Awards Reception on October 20 at the National Academy of Sciences Building. Dean David Dolling was a presenter at the event, at which two SEAS graduate students were honored with $15,000 ARCS scholarships: Ian Carr, a Ph.D. candidate in the MAE department, and Claire Silverstein, a Ph.D. candidate in the CEE department. Both of them were named Gerald and Paula McNichols Foundation Scholars. Congratulations to Ian and Claire.

DreamWorks is scouting for students interested in art/illustration, design, character animation, computer graphics, and media studies jobs and internships. The Cognitive Computing Odyssey
Cognitive computing unites fields like AI, machine learning, and natural language processing to “think” about data more like a human than a computer. It treats cancer patients, personalizes education, and predicts financial markets. And it's just getting started. This November, students from across the country will gather in one of three cities (San Francisco, Austin, Boston) to explore the technology, future, and jobs of cognitive computing as part of The Cognitive Computing Odyssey. The Cognitive Computing Odyssey is presented by Uncubed and IBM. Travel and lodging will be fully covered for accepted students. Apply and learn more.

Through regular speaker series, professional panels, and workshops, the GW MAPs-U organization will expose the importance of networking for professional development. The annual Pitch George Competition is one of the GW’s premier entrepreneurial initiatives organized by the GW Center for Entrepreneurial Excellence (CFEE).
