Awards & Honors:
Prof. Charles Garris (MAE) was recognized with a Resolution by the GW Board of Trustees thanking him for his service to the university, especially his leadership as chair of the Executive Committee of the Faculty Senate. The resolution reads, in part, “Resolved, That the Board of Trustees of the George Washington University expresses to Professor Charles Garris its deep appreciation and gratitude for his long and distinguished service, and looks forward to his continued association with the university.”
Research:
Together with the optics company Omega Optics Inc., Prof. Volker Sorger (ECE) has been awarded a Phase I SBIR grant titled “Toward Ultra-Dense Integrated Plasmonic Circuits.” His role will be as a consultant in Phase I of the grant. The funding amount for the nine-month grant is $225,000.

On May 17, WJLA-ABC 7 aired a news story that included an interview with Prof. Samer Hamdar (CEE) about using carpooling apps versus using mass transit.
Prof. Russell Hemley (CEE) was quoted in the article “Probing the Possibility of Life on ‘Super-Earths’” on the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s Experimental Highlights webpage. The article describes his group’s activities at the laboratory and the National Ignition Facility’s Discovery Science campaign aimed at determining if giant rocky planets could have Earth-like magnetic fields.
Prof. Tianshu Li (CEE) has published a paper in Nature Communications with his doctoral students Yuanfei Bi and Boxiao Cao. The citation is: Y. Bi, B. Cao, and T. Li. “Enhanced heterogeneous ice nucleation by special surface geometry,” Nature Communications 8, 15372 (2017). The National Science Foundation’s Science360 selected the paper as its top story on May 18, and these external media outlets also covered it: ScienceDaily, Phys.org, EurekAlert, and ScienceNewsline.

Conferences & Presentations:
On May 24, Prof. David Broniatowski (EMSE) was an invited panelist at the “Engaging Narratives: The New (Old) Battlefield” event hosted at GW's Elliott School of International Affairs. The title of his talk was “Effective vaccine communication during the Disneyland measles outbreak: Communication Strategies for Behavior Change on Social Media.” On May 26, he chaired a session titled “Innovation, Science, and Governance” at the Industry Studies Association Conference in Washington, D.C.
Prof. Edward Della Torre (ECE) and his student Ali Jamali, together with their colleague Dr. Ermanno Cardelli from the University of Perugia in Italy, presented the paper “Properties of Uniaxial Media Model” at the 11th Symposium on Hysteresis Modeling and Micromagnetics, held May 29-30 in Barcelona, Spain.
Prof. Russell Hemley (CEE) recently gave two lectures: 1) “New Views of Structure and Bonding Revealed by Pressure,” which he presented on May 15 at a department colloquium at Cornell University’s Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology; and 2) “A New World of Materials in Extreme Environments,” which he presented May 19 at a colloquium at Johns Hopkins University’s Applied Physics Laboratory.
Other News:
The National Science Foundation (NSF) recently invited Prof. Howie Huang (ECE) to participate in a site visit of a national supercomputing center. During the two-day visit, the five-person team evaluated the governance, system performance, and scientific impact of one of the largest NSF-funded supercomputers. Together with researchers from MIT, Purdue, and UT Austin, Prof. Huang helped produce a set of panel findings and recommendations to NSF that will be used to guide the future operation of the supercomputer.
The Optical Society Board of Directors has approved Prof. Volker Sorger (ECE) as a Senior Member of the society.
Student News
GW recently produced a video on the Clark Engineering Scholars Program. The video features five scholars: Tania Singh (BME), Samantha Brick (CEE), Ian Wong (CEE), Alexander Snouffer (MAE), and Abbie Gillen (EMSE).
On May 25, Deniz Marti and Keith Walker, both advised by Prof. David Broniatowski (EMSE), presented talks at the Industry Studies Association Conference, held in Washington, D.C. The two talks were: 1) Marti, H. D. and Broniatowski, D. A. (2017). “Risky Micrometeoroid and Orbital Debris (MMOD) Decision-Making at NASA: A Fuzzy-Trace Theory Approach,” and 2) Walker, K. and Broniatowski, D. (2017). “Machine Learning for text classification and the need for interpretation research: A case study at the FDA."

NEW SEAS COURSE: New Venture Creation Using Design Thinking (SEAS 4800 / SEAS 6800)

This brand new, 1.5-credit course is based on Stanford University's design thinking framework to create a startup. The focal point of the course will be a public health issue impacting Washington, D.C. You will work in interdisciplinary teams throughout the course to create a customer-centric product/service for local users. From establishing organizations to creating products and services, design is a process.
In this course, you will be introduced to elements of leadership, and problem solving approaches that draw on design thinking, the lean startup methodology, entrepreneurship, and other frameworks used by business leaders to spark the creation of new products and services, and to start ventures aimed at creating sustainable change.
