Conferences & Presentations:
Prof. Tarek El-Ghazawi (ECE) served as the program chair for the 6th International Symposium on Applied Reconfigurable Computing (ARC2010), which was held in Bangkok, Thailand, from March 17th – 19th.
Prof. Julie Ryan (EMSE) was an invited panelist for a public and graduate George Mason University seminar entitled "Assurance in Cyberspace: Grand Challenges of Cyber Warfare and Trust.” The panel was led by a national leader in the cyber warfare and cyber forensics community, BGen (USAF, ret.) Jim Jaeger, formerly NSA assistant deputy director for operations, and currently director of cyber-systems, General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems. The panel also included: John Woods (Hunton & Williams, cybersecurity legal expert), Matt Stern (GDAIS, creator of Cyber Shockwave national crises simulation) and Greg Kipper (GDAIS, cyberforensics author and cyber systems futurist). The seminar was held on March 22nd. Separately, Prof. Ryan also participated in a panel discussion on "Plagiarism and Teaching" sponsored by the GW School of Business on March 5th. The panel discussion was hosted by the Teaching Excellence Taskforce of the School of Business.
Prof. Poorvi Vora (CS) presented invited seminars on "Independently-Verifiable Secret-Ballot Elections" at Princeton University and Hewlett-Packard Laboratories, Princeton, on March 11th and 12th, respectively. The Princeton University talk was part of the Information Sciences and Systems seminar series.
Books & Papers:
Prof. Michael Stankosky (EMSE) and Drs. Vincent Ribiere and Mirghani Mohamed (former EMSE students) have collaborated on a chapter in a recently published book, Quantitative Quality of Service for Grid Computing, published by IGI Global. The chapter is “The Key Requirements for Deploying Knowledge Management Services in a Semantic-grid Environment.”

On February 25th, Prof. Tarek El-Ghazawi (ECE) participated in a roundtable discussion on high-performance computing and U.S. manufacturing organized by the U.S. Council on Competitiveness in Washington D.C. NSF, DoE, DoD, NASA, Boeing, GE, Proctor and Gamble, UIUC/NCSA, USC, and the White House were among those represented. The group discussed manufacturing application areas and provided recommendations to entice the government to invest future U.S. budgets in enhancing U.S. productivity and competitiveness by making high-performance computing available to industry, particularly small and medium manufacturing companies.
Prof. Kim Roddis (CS chair) joined 180 ASCE members from across the country who gathered in Washington, D.C., March 23rd – 25th for the 2010 ASCE Legislative Fly-In. Over the course of the two-day meeting, participants learned about issues affecting civil engineering and how to develop relationships with their elected officials, and then put those new skills into practice by visiting their lawmakers on Capitol Hill. Reps. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., and John Mica, R-Fla., met Fly-In participants and spoke with them about the status of surface transportation and other infrastructure concerns they are taking up in their committees.

Kevin Wagner, (Ph.D. student, ECE) and Prof. Milos Doroslovacki (ECE) attended the IEEE International Conference on Acoustic, Speech, and Signal Processing held in Dallas, TX, March 14th – 19th. At the conference they presented their paper "Proportionate-type NLMS algorithms based on maximization of the joint conditional PDF for the weight deviation vector."

Graduate Student R&D Showcase: Don’t miss your chance to participate in the 4th Annual Graduate Student Research & Development Showcase, where you can show your R&D projects to local companies and federal labs. GW Women in Business (GWWIB) will present its first annual spring conference on Saturday, April 10th from 9:30 am - 3:30 pm in Duques and Funger Halls.
