Prof. Kausik Sarkar (MAE), his student Shirshendu Paul, and collaborators at North Dakota State University published the following journal article on echogenic liposomes for concurrent ultrasound imaging and drug delivery: Nahire, R., Haldar, M.K., Paul, S., Margoum, A., Ambre, A.H., Katti, K.S., Gange, K.N., Srivastava, D.K., Sarkar, K., Mallik, S., “Polymer-coated echogenic lipid nanoparticles with dual release triggers", Biomacromolecules 14, 841-853.

Conferences & Presentations:
On May 28, Prof. Chunlei Liang’s (MAE) group contributed to a presentation at the second International Workshop on High-Order Methods, held in Cologne, Germany and sponsored by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research and the German Aerospace Center, DLR.  The title of their research is “Simulation of flow over a 2D flapping wing using a Correction Procedure via Reconstruction (CPR) method.” The authors are Bin Zhang, Junfeng Wang, Jung J. Choi, and Chunlei Liang. The first two authors are doctoral students of Prof. Liang, and the third author is a visiting postdoc research scholar of Prof. Liang.

Prof. Michael Plesniak (MAE) delivered the keynote lecture, “Fluid Dynamics of Human Phonation - Pathology of Polyps,” at the 2013 Research Symposium on Environmental and Applied Fluid Dynamics, held May 21 at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD.  Dr. Kartik Bulusu, a postdoctoral scientist in Prof. Plesniak's Biofluid Dynamics Laboratory, also presented a talk, titled “Multi-Scale Secondary Flows in Curved Artery Models:  Effects of Perturbations Induced by Fractured Stents,” at the symposium.

Prof. Hoeteck Wee (CS) was an invited speaker at the Workshop on Leakage, Tampering and Viruses, held June 2-6 in Warsaw, Poland.  Two of Prof. Wee’s papers also appeared at Eurocrypt, one of the top two conferences in cryptography, held May 26-30 in Athens, Greece: 1) Carmit Hazay (Bar Ilan University, Israel), Adriana Lopez-Alt (New York University, USA), Hoeteck Wee (George Washington University, USA) and Daniel Wichs (Northeastern University, USA), “Leakage-Resilient Cryptography from Minimal Assumptions” and 2) Dov Gordon (Applied Communication Sciences, USA), Tal Malkin (Columbia University, USA), Mike Rosulek (University of Montana, USA) and Hoeteck Wee (George Washington University, USA), “Multi-Party Computation of Polynomials and Branching Programs without Simultaneous Interaction.”  Another paper appeared at the 45th ACM Symposium on the Theory of Computing (STOC), the most prestigious conference in theoretical computer science, held June 1-4 in Palo Alto, CA: Sergey Gorbunov (University of Toronto), Vinod Vaikuntanathan (University of Toronto), and Hoeteck Wee (George Washington University), “Attribute-Based Encryption for Circuits.”

Prof. Tim Wood (CS) and his doctoral student Jinho Hwang published two papers at the IEEE International Symposium on Integrated Network Management, held May 27-31 in Ghent, Belgium.  Jinho presented the papers "A Component-based Performance Comparison of Four Hypervisors" and "Benefits and Challenges of Managing Heterogeneous Data Centers," which were the results of his previous summer internship at IBM Research.

Other News:
The American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ Pressure Vessels & Piping (PVP) Division recently announced the Outstanding Fluid-Structure-Interaction Paper award to a paper titled “Spectral difference solution of incompressible flow over an inline tube bundle with oscillating cylinder,” which was co-authored by Christopher Cox, Prof. Chunlei Liang, and Prof. Michael Plesniak, all of MAE.  Christopher is a doctoral student co-advised by Profs. Liang and Plesniak.  The award will be presented at the Fluid-Structure Interaction Technical Committee meeting at the 2013 PVP Conference.

Prof. Kausik Sarkar (MAE) advised his student Amit Katiyar's dissertation, “Dynamics of Ultrasound Contrast Microbubbles and Therapeutic Effects of Low Intensity Ultrasound,” which was awarded the 2013 Allan P. Colburn prize for best dissertation in engineering and mathematical sciences at the University of Delaware.

The GW Institute for Nanotechnology (GWIN) is pleased to announce the call for proposals from university faculty interested in nanotechnology research.  The deadline to submit proposals is Monday, June 24 at 5:00 pm.
