Awards & Honors:
The U.K. Royal Academy of Engineering has selected Dr. Tarek El-Ghazawi (ECE) as a Distinguished Visiting Fellow. In this role, he will visit a number of universities in the United Kingdom to deliver lectures and collaborate on research. Dr. El-Ghazawi's current research interests include high-performance computing; post-Moore’s laws processor paradigms, the convergence of HPC, clouds, big data, and machine learning; and extreme scale computing.

The Baltimore Sun quoted Dr. Poorvi Vora (CS) in an article on the security of Maryland's voting systems, “Maryland officials look to shore up election defenses after Russian tampering.’’ The Baltimore Sun is the paper of record for the state of Maryland.

Dr. Scott Sklar (energy focus area lead, Environmental and Energy Management Institute) published the article “Post-hurricane infrastructure reconstruction in the Caribbean Islands: when business-as-usual is risky business” in the February 17 issue of the Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas newsletter.

Dr. Ahmed Louri (ECE) has been re-appointed the vice-chair for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Computer Society Fellow Evaluation Committee for 2018. The IEEE Grade of Fellow is one of the most prestigious honors and is conferred upon a person with an extraordinary record of accomplishments in any IEEE field of interest. The vice-chair determines whether the work of each candidate for the grade of Fellow is recognized and considered outstanding in the Society's field of interest, and he is responsible for making the final decision as to elevation to the grade of IEEE Fellow.

Randolph A. Graves Founder’s Award
Dietrich Reidenbaugh, a junior in the Department of Computer Science was awarded the $500 Randolph A. Graves Founder’s Award for implementing a digital scoring process.
AccelerateGW I-Corps Site Program Grants
The AccelerateGW I-Corps Site Program is funded by the National Science Foundation and managed by GW’s Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (OIE), and it provides grants of up to $3,000 to GW students, faculty, and staff who have great technology and want to explore the potential for commercializing it. At the Showcase, GW’s Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship awarded $3,000 AccelerateGW I-Corps Site Program grants to 17 Showcase participants. Congratulations to:

SEAS Computing Facility
The SEAS Computing Facility (SEAS CF) will hold a series of workshops covering a range of topics throughout the spring semester:
MATLAB Workshops: Fridays, 1:00 – 3:00 pm (Tompkins 405)
MATLAB (matrix laboratory) is a multi-paradigm numerical computing environment and fourth-generation programming language used in various backgrounds of engineering, science, and economics. These workshops will cover the fundamentals of MATLAB programming.

Solidworks Workshops: Fridays, 3:00 – 5:00 pm (Tompkins 405)
Solidworks is a solid modeling computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided engineering (CAE) computer program that enables engineers and architects to design, inspect, and manage engineering projects within an integrated graphical user interface. Through these workshops you will learn how to navigate the SolidWorks interface, create sketches, set up parametric relations, and create 3D models. You will create the different parts of a V6 internal combustion engine from scratch, assemble it, and see it come to life.

MATLAB and Solidworks tutoring will be offered throughout the spring semester in Tompkins 401 on the following days:
