Conferences & Presentations:
Prof. Ken Chong (MAE) participated in the NSF CAREER workshop held at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, March 25th – 26th. He conducted mock panels, reviewing real proposals, and mentored young faculty members planning to submit CAREER proposals. Approximately 150 young faculty members attended the workshop, among them Prof. Pinhas Ben-Tzvi (MAE). A dozen NSF program directors were present, as well. The next CAREER workshop will be held in Lincoln, NE, September 1st and 2nd of this year.
Prof. Suresh Subramaniam (ECE) presented the following paper, co-authored with former ECE graduate student Dr. Onur Turkcu, on March 16, 2010: "Optimal waveband switching in optical ring networks", in IEEE INFOCOM, San Diego, CA, March 15th – 19th.

Prof. Ed Della Torre (ECE) has published the following article: Provenzano, V.; Shull, R.D.; Waterstrat, R.M.; Bennett, L.H.; Della Torre, E.; Seyoum, H., “Magnetic Properties of Zr 9 Ni 11 Intermetallic Compound,” IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 46, pp. 502 - 504 (Feb. 2010).
Profs. Jason Zara and Vesna Zederic (both of ECE) and Prof. Zara’s doctoral student, O'Tega Ejofodomi, published “Tissue-mimicking bladder wall phantoms for evaluating acoustic radiation force—optical coherence elastography systems,” in Medical Physics (March 10, 2010).
Staff News
I am very pleased to announce that Nancy Davis has joined the SEAS Office of Development and Alumni Relations as director of development. Nancy comes to us with 19 years of fundraising experience including, most recently, as leadership gift officer at Lehigh University, where she worked from 2001 to 2009. Prior to that, she was director of development at CAMP, Inc., a non-profit manufacturing teaching facility in Cleveland, Ohio. Nancy received her B.A. magna cum laude from Lehigh University and is currently working toward a master’s in non-profit organizations at Case Western Reserve University. She and her husband will be living in Annapolis. Nancy very much looks forward to meeting many of you in the coming weeks and to helping engage alumni and raise funds for our great school. Huda Asfour (ECE) and Aleksandar Stefanovski (CS) have been awarded GW Philip Amsterdam Graduate Teaching Assistant Awards for outstanding teaching. GW presents this award annually to only three graduate teaching assistants from across the university, and this year, two of the three winners are SEAS students. Huda is a doctoral student working with Prof. Matthew Kay (ECE), who says, “Huda has made major contributions to the teaching mission of SEAS as a laboratory instructor in ECE 184 (Principles and Practice of BME), 159 (BME Properties Laboratory), and 117 (Intro to Digital Signal Processing). Aleksandar was nominated by Prof. Rhys Price Jones, who says, “Aleks is more than my TA, he is my collaborator: thanks to him, GW's CSci 053 is among the very best introductory CS courses in the country.”
ECE graduate student Arush Gadkar presented the following paper, co-authored with Prof. Suresh Subramaniam (ECE): "Design and Performance Evaluation of Wavelength-Constrained Optical Time-Slotted Networks" at OSA's Optical Fiber Communications (OFC) conference in San Diego, CA, March 21st – 25th.

Graduate Student R&D Showcase: Don’t miss your chance to participate in the 4th Annual Graduate Student Research & Development Showcase, where you can show your R&D projects to local companies and federal labs. The event includes a poster contest with cash prizes for the best presentations: First Place = $2,000; Second Place = $1,200; Third Place = $800. The Showcase will be held on Friday, April 30, 2010, from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm in the Marvin Center’s Grand Ballroom. The deadline for applications to participate is Wednesday, March 31, 2010.
GW Women in Business (GWWIB) will present its first annual spring conference on Saturday, April 10th from 9:30 am - 3:30 pm in Duques and Funger Halls. Men and women, business and non-business majors are encouraged to attend. GWWIB hopes to facilitate a discussion on the major topics learned in the classroom and how these issues are translated into the real world of business. The discussions will be facilitated by GW professors and will feature panels of experts, as well as an opportunity for Q&A by conference participants. The conference will also include a networking luncheon, at which participants will be able to meet representatives from M&T Bank, Coca-Cola Company, Deloitte, the World Bank, Capitol Hill, DuPont, NewVision Health, Women in Technology, and many more!
