Faculty News
Research:
Dr. Taeyoung Lee (MAE) is a co-principal investigator of a multidisciplinary research team selected for the 2018 NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts Program, Phase I. In this project, titled “Marsbee - Swarm of Flapping Wing Flyers for Enhanced Mars Exploration,” researchers from the University of Alabama in Huntsville, GW, and Tokyo University (Japan) will investigate the feasibility of utilizing flapping wing, micro unmanned aerial vehicles as a reconfigurable sensor network in the Martian environment. Dr. Lee will be in charge of constructing nonlinear control systems and exploration schemes for 3D topographic mapping. Phase I of the project is nine months and has a budget of $125,000.

 

Publications:
Dr. Michael Keidar (MAE) has published the following paper: I. Schweigert, T. Burton, G. Thompson, S. Langendorf, M. Walker, and M. Keidar. “Plasma Interaction with Emmissive Surface with Debye-Scale Grooves,” Plasma Source Science and Technology, Vol. 27, 045004, 2018.

 

Conferences & Presentations:
Dr. Tim Wood (CS) was accompanied by CS undergraduates Mykola Yurchenko and Patrick Cody and by Ph.D. student Wei Zhang at the Symposium for SDN Research, held March 28-29 in Los Angeles, CA. Mykola and Patrick presented a demonstration of the OpenNetVM Network Function Virtualization platform, while Wei gave a presentation about her work on improving the security of network middleboxes.

 

Other News:
Dr. Payman Dehghanian (ECE) attended the National Science Foundation-sponsored Workshop on Reinventing Electric Power Curriculum with Sustainability Focus. The workshop was held April 5-6 at the National Academies of Science Building. More than 100 participants from industry and faculty, including department heads and engineering deans, attended.

 

Student News
BME graduate students Shuyue (Frank) Guan and Kristina Landino presented posters at the IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging, held April 6 here in Washington, DC. Frank presented “Breast cancer detection using transfer learning in convolutional neural networks,” and Kristina presented “Performance evaluation of 19 salience-detection algorithms and their application to mammograms.” Frank and Kristina are advised by Dr. Murray Loew (BME).

 

Other News
On April 10, the Structural Stability Research Council awarded Dr. Mahdi Asadnia an Honorable Mention for the Vinnakota Award for the paper “Modeling Out-of-Flatness and Residual Stresses in Steel Plate Girders,” co-authored by Dr. Asadnia and Dr. Kim Roddis (CEE). Dr. Asadnia recently completed his doctorate in civil and environmental engineering. Dr. Roddis was his doctoral advisor. Drs. Majid Manzari (CEE), Pedro Silva (CEE), Sameh Badie (CEE), and Dr. Milton Critchfield (adjunct faculty, CEE) served on his doctoral committee.

 

SEAS Computing Facility
Arduinos and Raspberry Pi Workshops
SEAS Computing Facility’s remaining workshop on Arduinos and Raspberry Pis will take place on April 21 in the SEH Studio Labs (SEH 1300/1400/1450) from 1:00 to 5:00 pm. The workshop will assume that attendees understand programing concepts like loops and “if” statements. Experience with Python, C/C++, or circuits is not required. All equipment will be provided.

Objectives:
The purpose of the workshopss is to help participants:

  • learn the basics of these technologies and how to get started
  • create some introductory projects involving sensors and LED displays
  • gain experience with basic programming in Python and C/C++ as well as simple circuits

Tutoring:
MATLAB and Solidworks tutoring will be offered throughout the spring semester in Tompkins 401 on the following days:

  • Wednesdays: 12:00 – 5:00 pm
  • Thursdays: 12:00 – 3:30 pm
  • Fridays: 5:00 – 6:00 pm

The Environmental and Energy Management Institute is collaborating with Booz Allen Hamilton to hold the 11th Ideas Festival, which will bring together humanitarians, luminaries, academics, community partners, government officials, and other experts to challenge conventional thinking and develop new insights for making our communities stronger. Technology Commercialization course: GW’s Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, in collaboration with the GW School of Business, will offer Seminar in Technology Commercialization (ISTM 6239) during GW’s 2018 Summer I session. The course will run May 21 - June 25, meeting on Monday evenings from 6:10 – 9:00 pm. This is a hands-on experience, applying the Lean Startup Approach to tech commercialization. Students may bring their own technology to the class or work on a technology from the GW Technology Commercialization Office. Students also will be eligible for AccelerateGW NSF I-Corps Grants of up to $3,000 to cover expenses for doing customer discovery interviews!
