Summary
- These systems aren't to be used for personal material.
- Any activity or data on the system is subject to review.
- There are no guarantees; if it's confidential, encrypt it.
- The primary purpose of the SEAS computing resources is to support SEAS class assignments and projects, and SEAS graduate/faculty research. These systems and resources are not to be used for personal data files or communications, except where directly related to this primary purpose.
- In an effort to provide reasonable performance and security, SEAS Computing Facility staff routinely monitor the use of the systems. This may include examining running processes, disk usage, or network activity. (Examples: If the email system has trouble, the contents of the mail queue might be examined to determine the cause of the problem; if a disk drive runs out of space, the files on that disk may be scrutinized.)
If routine monitoring discloses improper, unauthorized, or illegal activity, corrective and/or punitive measures will be taken. Transcripts of illegal activity may be retained as evidence for legal proceedings.
- ANY activity on the GWU campus network *could* be monitored. One of the properties of the network hardware in use at GW is that it's possible to eavesdrop on the activity of other users. The folks that manage the network can try to make it as secure as possible, but nobody can guarantee that your email, your talk sessions, your files, etc., are seen by your eyes only. If you want to be "absolutely sure" that something private stays private, encrypt it (for example, with PGP) before it ever touches the network.
