CSci 161.10: Software Engineering II
Department of Computer Science
The George Washington University, Spring 2009
CRN 41739 (Lab 42081)Individual Project
Introduction
The individual term project is an opportunity for you to explore the design of a project idea in detail. The goals are two-fold: to provide you with additional experience in software engineering activities relating to system specification and design, and to prepare you for the senior design sequence. After settling on a project idea, you will develop the idea over the course of the semester by producing the following: use-case diagrams and user stories, a requirements specification, a prototype, and a set of time and cost estimates.
Initial Procedure
To begin the project, you should complete the following:
- Read the Request for Proposals (RFP) for Senior Design. The RFP provides you with an idea of the scope of project required for Senior Design.
- Browse previous Senior Design Projects.
- Brainstorm project ideas with your classmates during lab.
- Submit a list of potential ideas, details below.
Submission Details
By midnight on 15 January 2009 you should email your instructor a list of four potential project ideas. It is perfectly acceptable if more than one student submits the same or similar ideas. Each idea should be described in a short paragraph (3-4 sentences). Your email's subject should be CSCI 161 Project Ideas and you should include your descriptions in the body of the email in plain text.
Further Work
After submitting your project ideas and before the next class (22 January 2009), you should give some thought to which of your ideas you wish to select. Some items to think about include the following: what hardware and/or software resources are necessary to implement this project, what skills will I need for this project (particularly consider skills that are necessary but you do not currently possess), could this idea form the basis of a start-up business, is this an area I will continue to be interested in?
Note that by midnight of next Thursday (22 January 2009) you will need to choose a single idea to pursue for your individual project.
