BATON ROUGE, LA--Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco today issued Proclamation No. 48 KBB 2005, declaring a state of emergency for the state Louisiana as Hurricane Katrina poses an imminent threat, carrying severe storms, high winds, and torrential rain that may cause flooding and damage to private property and public facilities, and threaten the safety and security of the citizens of the state of Louisiana The state of emergency extends from Friday, August 26, 2005, through Sunday, September 25, 2005, unless terminated sooner.

Just before we walked into this room, President Bush called and told me to share with all of you that he is very concerned about the citizens. He is concerned about the impact that this hurricane would have on our people. And he asked me to please ensure that there would be a mandatory evacuation of New Orleans.

We are ready, prepared to do all that we can.

BATON ROUGE—Today Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco forwarded a letter to President Bush requesting that he declare an emergency for the State of Louisiana due to Hurricane Katrina.

La. Gov. Asks Chief of Staff to Lead, Coordinate Recovery Efforts
Louisiana Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco reported she has appointed her chief of staff, Andy Kopplin, to lead and coordinate the state's long-term recovery efforts at her direction.

"Andy will be my voice to FEMA and other federal agencies, local governments, business and civic leaders, planners, foundation staff, and the many other citizens we plan to engage in this rebuilding process," she continued. "He will direct the implementation of the state's plan through my cabinet and will coordinate the advisory committees that I will appoint to give me guidance in this rebuilding process.
