Latest Science and Technologies Activities
in Emergency Management following Sept 11 Attacks
By Lydia Castro
After September 11th attacks, everybody has been wondering what new
science and technologies should be developed in order to discover future
attacks, mitigate impacts of other attacks, and in general to be prepared
for any situation that could put our life in danger. Many International
organizations are collaborating among government agencies, academic research
centers, and private sector businesses and looking for new information
technologies that can help organizations prepare for, respond to and mitigate
disasters including natural or terrorist attacks involving chemical, biological,
or nuclear weapons. But government and agencies have been very careful
on revealing information to press and communities.
Some of the recent technologies that have been developed lately are:
· Recent and important developments would be those designed
to increase the security of chemical agent stockpiles. For this matter
earth-covered, reinforced igloos will be built to protect the mustard agent
stockpile that are stored underground without incident since WWII-era.
After this construction the stockpiles will be moved into these structures
and stored until the mustard agent stockpile ca be safely neutralized.
· FEMA has announced that Fire departments especially
those in New York would receive funds that will be used for new personal
protective equipment and firefighting equipment for vehicles. These equipments
will provide departments with some of the most technological and basic
gear, including hoses, ladders, and ventilation equipments.
· Army commanders are testing a system that digitally
tracks the battle while the tactical operations center is being torn down
and moved to another location. This system will give the commander
flexibility to command and control from an aerial platform, and allows
him to maneuver around the battlefield and reposition quickly.
· The Federal Aviation Administration is obtaining new
equipment for passenger screening and baggage screening and the transport
Security Agency is working with Government to give training to screeners
and baggage screening techniques to employees at airports because there
are still loopholes in this matter.
· Finally as the world becomes more interconnected and
interdependent, satellite imagery availability and wireless communication
capabilities are the next form to help emergency rescue teams to minimize
fatalities and communities to recover faster. New specialized computer
software and hardware as well as high-resolution satellite images are being
developed to help emergency personnel to respond to exact location where
the disaster had happened.
In conclusion, after September 11the attacks there
have been a new interest on developing new technologies related to emergency
management and security but not much information could be found, though.
It is believed that if you keep it secret, fewer options will be that terrorists
would found their way to attack and react to new science development and
technologies and find their way to hurt people, governments and nations,
as well as the environment. |
