There have been a number of ferry boat
accidents in the past
year. Below are ferry boat accidents
that have occurred during the past year in chronological order.
12/16/02:
In Liberia,
about 180 people were killed on a 200 plus passenger wooden raft.

12/19/02:
In Brazil
a
ferry carrying about 300 capsized killing 7. 206
swam to safety and about 50-80 were missing. Records
are not exact; there is no
registration
for passengers. The cause could be
related to overcrowding, the legal capacity was 150.

12/30/02:
At US Lake Buena Vista Magic Kingdom Walt Disney World human error
caused
injuries to 8 out of the 400 passengers on a ferry.

04/12/03:
A double deck ferry sank due to weather killing 22 of 200 passengers.
04/22/03:
A tropical storm caused 2 ferries to capsize. About
108 bodies were recovered with 200 plus missing of
the 400
reported passengers. Records are not
well documented on the ferries. The
other ferry only about 30 survived and the rest are thought to be dead.

05/25/03:
2 ferries collided in the Philippines,

07/09/03:
Turbulent waters caused a ferry to capsize carrying 750 passengers in Bangladesh. About 150 survived. The
passenger capacity was reported to be
more than 3 times the legal limit aiding in the incident.

08/02/03:
Cargo and ferry boats collide in Nassau,
Bahamas
killing 192 and injuring 16.

In Indonesia
the Wimala Dharma ferry sank killing about 6 people with many reported
missing. About 150 people were
rescued. Approximately 200 were
aboard. Safety efforts usually are not
well practiced or enforced in Indonesia,
and rescue efforts are usually unavailable.

09/07/03:
700 passenger ferry, exceeding capacity, capsized in Bangladesh
and about 100 were rescued.
