Introduction:

I received degrees from the Delft University of Technology (The Netherlands) and The George Washington University (GWU). Thomas A. Mazzuchi acted as my dissertation advisor at GWU. My education focused on several disciplines of operations research such as probabilistic risk analysis, reliability analysis, computer science and mathematical control and policy modeling.

I joined GWU's the Engineering Management faculty as a visiting assistant professor from September 1997 to August 1999. In September 1999, I started a tenure track position as an Assistant Professor in the Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Department (EMSE) at GWU. Effective September 2004 I was promoted to Associate Professor and effective September 2008 I was promoted to Professor. I teach on average two courses per semester. I have been awarded a courtesy appointment in the Decision Sciences department of the GWU School of Business since November of 2010.

During my stay at GWU, I have worked with a research team affiliated with the Institute of Crisis, Disaster and Risk management and consisting of my dissertation advisor Thomas A. Mazzuchi and Jack Harrald, both from GWU, Jason Merrick from Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond VA, and Martha Grabowski from Rensselear Polytechnic Institute, Troy NY. Currently, I am also affiliated with the Institute for Integration Decision Sciences and Statistics, which is housed in Decision Sciences department at the GWU Business School. Collaborative research efforts have involved in the past, besides the research team above, Refik Soyer at GWU-Decision Sciences, Samuel Kotz at GWU-EMSE, Roger M. Cooke at the Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands and Resources for the Future, Donatella Vicari at the Statistics Department of University “La Sapienza” of Rome, Italy, Salvador Cruz Rambaud, Jose Garcia Perez at the University of Almeria, Spain and Jose Manuel Herrerias, Rafael Herrerias and Lina Garcia Garcia at the University of Granada, Spain.

Through my research & consulting I have been exposed to multiple projects assisting organizations in making structured decisions involving complex systems, specializing in risk and reliability problems. These activities were of a versatile nature and I consider myself fortunate to deal with and gain experience in both theoretical-quantitative and applications-oriented matters.
