Congratulations to the 2008 Graduate Student R & D Showcase Winners

SEAS hosted its second annual Graduate Student Research and Development Showcase on April 23, 2008 at the GW Marvin Center’s Continental Ballroom. The Showcase is held to highlight the research activities at SEAS and to foster interaction among local and regional industry, governmental organizations, potential GW students, alumni, and SEAS faculty and graduate students. It is organized under the auspices of the SEAS Council of Entrepreneurial Tech Transfer and Commercialization (CET2C), with planning and organizational support from SEAS alumnus Randy Graves.

Fifty-seven graduate students entered the poster contest in this year’s Showcase and competed for first, second, and third place prizes. The posters were judged on the basis of presentation and content, and the top three projects were given cash awards. The $500 first-place award went to Mike Wakid and Can Kirmizibayrak for “Image-Guided Surgery for Medialization Laryngosplasty;” the $300 second-place award went to Christian Salmon for “Distribution of General Aviation Accidents in Vicinity of Non-Towered Airports;” and the $200 third-place award went to Darren Broemmer for “Controlled Language Programming.”

In addition to the poster session and contest, the Showcase included a keynote address entitled “Trends in Engineering Research and Education,” by Dr. Richard Buckius, the assistant director of the National Science Foundation’s Directorate for Engineering. GW President Steven Knapp also attended the Showcase and presented the awards to the winners of the poster competition.
