SEAS Endowment Funds

SEAS Endowment Funds

For centuries, gifts to the endowments of colleges and universities have been the primary means by which individuals share their resources with future generations and help sustain the forward march of humankind.

Gifts to endowments are lasting. The principal of the gift is invested and only the annual income is used for a designated purpose. Such gifts thus continue a donor's interests beyond his or her lifetime and ensure permanent support for important educational and research activities of the institution.

Most endowment funds are named for the donor or another honored person and thus serve as a continuing legacy of an individual's commitment to education and society. An endowment donor is a special kind of benefactor, one whose commitment is unusually deep and whose vision is unusually long, an individual with an understanding and appreciation of higher education's purpose and importance. Such individuals have been the primary force in the development of all great universities.

Throughout its history, The George Washington University's endowment has grown through the philanthropy of its alumni and friends. Their gifts have been an important element of the University's growth and quality. Today's GW is a living monument to their generosity and foresight. Its future strength will depend upon a continuation of this tradition by current and future generations.

Endowment funds reflect the varied activities of The George Washington University, which includes the School of Engineering and Applied Science. Endowment funds provide income to support: chairs and professorships that enable SEAS to attract distinguished faculty scholars, scholarships and fellowships to ensure educational opportunities for talented young men and women studying engineering and computer science, program funds to develop academic programs and student projects in engineering, and research funds to pursue new knowledge fields within engineering.
