"Bridge Program": The SEAS English as a Foreign Language Program

SEAS has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the English as a Foreign Language Program at Georgetown University. The purpose of the MOU is to establish a “Bridge Program” to help well qualified international students who lack strong English language skills to develop these skills and gain admission to SEAS undergraduate or graduate programs.

Quick facts about the “Bridge Program”:

  • All prospective international students must use the Bridge Program application form. Form should be returned to Howard Davis.
  • Both SEAS undergraduate applicants and SEAS graduate applicants are eligible to apply to the program.
  • In general, international students will be referred to the program by their Embassies.
  • A recent TOEFL score is preferred, but is not required for application.
  • There is a two-stage process for admission to GW/SEAS: (1) Students must receive a letter of “conditional admission” to GW (undergraduate applicants) or SEAS (graduate applicants) before they are referred to the EFL Program at Georgetown University. (2) Students are re-evaluated for admission by GW/SEAS at the successful completion of the EFL Program.
  • The EFL Program makes its own admission decisions, and limits on the number of GW/SEAS students in the Bridge Program may be imposed, based on EFL Program resources.
  • GW/SEAS is generally looking for these TOEFL scores for final admission: paper-based 550; computer-based 213; internet-based 80.
  • Georgetown University will issue the I-20 to the student initially, based on the conditional admission to GW/SEAS and admission to the EFL Program. The I-20 will be transferred to GW when the student has been admitted to SEAS.
