Why Engineering at GW?

The world faces complex, even daunting, engineering challenges at the beginning of the 21st century, but you, the next generation of engineers and computer scientists, will help lead the way through these challenges, using your creativity and confidence to make discoveries of which you have not yet even dreamt.

A strong education is the foundation on which you will build and make your contributions. So, as you explore your options for college, consider the many ways in which a GW education can help you build the solid foundation that will support you in your future career, as an engineer, a computer scientist, or one of the many, many other careers for which engineering can prepare you.

- The best of both worlds: The School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) is a small school within a good-sized university, so our students receive both the opportunities that larger universities can offer and the attention that only smaller schools can provide. SEAS provides a solid and challenging engineering and computer science education in small classes taught by professors who know students by name.

- A supportive community: From mentoring programs run by upperclassmen to tutoring sessions and an engineering house on campus, SEAS students live, study, and learn in an environment that supports their aspirations to become engineers and computer scientists.

- The opportunities that only Washington, DC provides: Washington, DC is more than monuments and politics; it is where new, national programs in science and technology are debated, created, launched, and managed. The DC-Metro region is also home to many of the world's pre-eminent research institutions and numerous high-tech companies. Internships or research projects at these institutions and companies are a wonderful complement to the classroom learning, and they give our students an advantage after they graduate and go on to graduate studies or a job.

- Internships and career support: SEAS has its own Career Services Office, which locates internships and job opportunities and helps place students when possible. It also brings employers to campus, participates in career fairs, and holds resume and interview seminars and other career-related events.

- Undergraduate research options: In addition to the internships offered at federal laboratories, research institutions, and high-tech companies in the area, SEAS students can also take advantage of undergraduate research opportunities with our faculty members.

- Study abroad: More and more, technical fields such as engineering and computer science, require people to work on project teams spread across the globe. Those who can show that they have learned about another culture and how to adapt to it are more competitive in the job market, and a SEAS study abroad experience can provide that competitive advantage. SEAS has a new study abroad program in Ireland - where 16 SEAS students spent the spring semester 2010 at University College, Dublin - and new programs coming soon in Korea, Spain, and Hungary.

- Extra-curricular activities:
Something for everyone : SEAS has more than 20 engineering-related student organizations and extra-curricular projects in which our students participate. From project and design competitions, to service projects and social organizations, to lectures and research projects, our students have many options to find activities that interest them, to meet other SEAS students, and to develop new skills.

- Meeting new friends: More than one-third of our undergraduates at SEAS are female. And our international students come from more than 70 countries. With such a mix, our students have many opportunities to build new friendships. And SEAS helps with this: the school and departments sponsor a number of social activities throughout the year - from welcome events to barbeques and movie nights - and even a house on campus where engineering students can gather.
