Bridge Program: Our English as a Foreign Language Program

GW's School of Engineering and Applied Science offers a Bridge Program to help well-qualified international students who lack strong English language skills to develop these skills and gain admission to our undergraduate or graduate programs.

Please note that for graduate students, the Bridge program is only open to those admitted to programs in the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

The Bridge Program, which is housed at Georgetown University, has students from more than 30 countries study in small classes designed to meet their diverse language backgrounds and learning styles. Classes focus on improving students' listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills through an integrated course approach that develops students' fluency in the English language.

Classes meet Monday through Friday between 9am and 4pm for a total of 20 hours of classroom instruction per week. Laboratory assignments and homework require additional time each day.

Our Bridge Program students generally remain in the program for one semester, but may remain for an entire year. Upon completion of the program, students must retake the TOELF or IELTS test and submit passing scores to GW before full admission can be offered. If you have already been admitted, click here for the next steps you must take to apply for the Bridge Program.

How to get started

Participants must first apply to and secure a letter of admissibility from one of our degree (undergraduate or graduate) programs. Note that not all of our graduate programs offer admissibility to the Bridge Program; please contact our Office of Graduate Admissions to find out if the program you are interested in participates.

Learn more about admissions to our undergraduate and graduate programs. Once offered admissibility, students then complete a separate application to the Bridge Program.
