All degree applicants must provide current GRE scores through ETS using institution code 5246.

GRE scores are not required for Graduate Certificate applicants.

We do not require a minimum GRE score, however competitive applicants receive a score at or exceeding the 90th percentile on the quantitative section and at or exceeding the 50th percentile on the verbal section.

All international applicants must submit current TOEFL or IELTS scores. TOEFL scores must be submitted through ETS to institution code 5246. IELTS scores must be sent though IELTS to GW's School of Engineering and Applied Science.

All Ph.D. and professional degree applicants must provide three letters of recommendation.

M.S applicants are not required to submit letters of recommendation unless they would like to be considered for funding in the form of an assistantship or fellowship.

When required, Letters of Recommendation should be requested and submitted online. Applicants should avoid sending paper copies of letters of recommendation.

All applicants must apply online through ApplyYourself. Note that international, visa-seeking students are not eligible to apply to our Graduate Certificate programs and instead must choose a degree program (M.S or Ph.D.).

Applicants to degree programs must select an Area of Focus that best matches their own academic and professional goals.

Be sure to submit the application. We encourage all applicants to submit the $75 application fee online using a credit card; we will not process applications with missing application fees.

You must hold on to your username and password so that you can track the progress of your application, view your decision letter online, and, if admitted, submit your request for enrollment all through the online application system.

Transcripts are required from all colleges and universities attended, whether or not credit was earned, the program was completed, or the credit appears as transfer credit on another transcript.

Unofficial transcripts from all colleges and universities attended must be uploaded to your online application. Please do not mail transcripts at the time of admission; if admitted, you will be instructed on how to provide official copies.

Applicants with degrees from Indian universities must include marks sheets in their upload. Applicants with transcripts in foreign languages must include the copy in the original language and the English translation. Do not upload evaluations of your transcripts.

You will receive emails from us updating you as your application goes through the admissions process. You will also be able to check the status of your application any time online by logging back into the ApplyYourself system.

Applicants may request consideration for financial aid in the form of an assistantship or fellowship when they complete the application for admission (see the Financial Aid section of the online application). Please note that M.S applicants who ask for consideration must submit three letters of recommendation.

Assistantships and fellowship awards are granted at the department-level. Awards are generally made around the time that admissions decisions are made, but award announcements may be announced later. Please contact your department's ADPC after you have been offered admissions to discuss assistantship or fellowship awards.

Decisions to award assistantships and fellowships are made at the departmental-level by a faculty-review committee. The staff in the Office of Graduate Admissions (who answer e-mail messages and phone calls) do not determine financial aid criteria and are not involved in financial aid decisions. Your chances of receiving financial aid cannot be determined prior to the faculty review of your completed application package.

If you wish to be considered for a fellowship or scholarship, your must submit your application by the fellowship/scholarship deadline (January 1 for the Fall term, and September 1 for the Spring term).

Send your most recent transcripts and keep in mind that if you are admitted, you will be required to furnish updated transcripts showing your degree conferred. Applicants from Indian universities should provide marks sheets up to the most recent semester.

Please do not send us this extra documentation. Instead, use your resume to highlight work experience and awards received.

If you authored or co-authored an article, please feel free to send that to us as a PDF attachment to engineering@gwu.edu at the time you submit your application. Be sure to include your full name and applicant ID in the body of the email.

The current application fee is $75.00. This fee covers the administrative cost of processing your application.

The application fee can be paid by credit card when you submit the online application. You may also choose to pay your application fee by check. If you pay your application fee by check, please note that your application will not be considered complete, and therefore will not be processed, until the fee is received.

Application fees are waived for current GW students and GW alumni. Members of the US Armed Forces, McNair Scholars, and others who are under contract fee waivers should send their supporting documentation electronically (scanned copies) to us at engineering@gwu.edu whenever possible.

Is it possible to defer payment of the application fee until after I am admitted?
The application fee is required in order for us to process your application and therefore cannot be deferred.

How do I request a receipt for the application fee?
Please login back to your online application in the ApplyYourself system and click on APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION. Once on that page, a submitted application receipt button should appear on the right side of your screen under a section "DETAILS".

To be considered for admission, applicants must submit scores from either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Applicants exempt from this requirement must hold a post-secondary (bachelor's or master's) degree from a college or university in the United States or one of these countries.

Applicants from the American University in Cairo, the American University in Beirut,and Bogazici University in Istanbul are also exempt from the TOEFL or IELTS requirement. If you have a question about your specific university, please let us know.

If you did not receive a degree from a university in one of the countries on this list, you must submit current, passing TOEFL or IELTS scores.

Minimum scores for admission consideration are:

• Academic IELTS: an overall band score of 6.0 with no individual score below 5.0; applicants to Engineering Management or Systems Engineering programs must have an overall band score of 7.0 with no individual score below 6.0


• TOEFL: 550 on paper-based; 213 on computer-based; or 80 on Internet-based; applicants to Engineering Management or Systems Engineering programs must have: 600 on paper-based; 250 on computer-based; or 100 on Internet-based

Admitted students who are required to submit a TOEFL or IELTS are also required to take the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) placement test at GW before registering for classes. Those who have a TOEFL score of 600 on the paper-based, 250 on the computer-based, or 100 on the Internet-based test, or who have an overall band score of 7.0 on the academic IELTS, with no individual band score below 6.0, are exempt from taking the placement test.

Depending on the EAP test results, students may be restricted to the number of courses that can be taken in addition to EAP courses. Students assigned to EAP courses should anticipate additional tuition expenses as well as a possible extended period of time required to complete their degree programs.

TOEFL and IELTS scores may not be more than two years old.

Chances are, while completing your application, you checked off a box that asked if you would like to be considered for assistantships or fellowships. Applicants applying for assistantships or fellowships are required to provide this extra documentation. If you inadvertently checked this box off, please let the SEAS Office of Graduate Admissions know that you do not wish to be considered for assistantships or fellowships by emailing engineering@gwu.edu.

Admissions decisions are made at the department-level by members of our faculty. The staff in the Office of Graduate Admissions (who answer e-mail messages and phone calls) do not determine admissions criteria and are not involved in admissions decisions. Your chances of being admitted cannot be determined prior to the faculty members reviewing your completed application package.

Note: Faculty likewise cannot comment on an applicant's chances. For this reason, we ask that you do not contact faculty directly regarding your admission status.

If admitted, you request to defer your admission for up to one year. You may make this request by email to engineering@gwu.edu. If you do not attend after one year, you may be required to reapply for admission.

The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences has been reassured by the Department of State that electronic admission letters are acceptable documentation for visa interviews.
