Faculty News

Research:

Prof. Murray Loew (BME) is a co-investigator on an NIH grant, “New generation of catheters for treatment of atrial fibrillation,” with Prof. Narine Sarvazyan (PI, GW Medical School). This is a two-year $2.27 million Small Business Technology Transfer Phase II grant awarded to Nocturnal Product Development, LLC and GW. The SEAS portion of the grant is $194,442.

Prof. Kausik Sarkar (MAE) has been awarded a two-year, $199,994 NSF grant for his project “Nonlinear response of encapsulated contrast microbubbles for noninvasive blood pressure measurement.” The proposed research will investigate the dependence of nonlinear scattered response of lipid-coated microbubbles on ambient hydrostatic pressure through in vitro experiments, and it will develop an appropriate mathematical model.

Publications:

Research Prof. Ashraf Imam (MAE) has published the following paper: A. Imam. “"The Thirteenth World Conference on Titanium (Ti-2015) - A review,” Journal of Metals, August 2, 2016.

The following paper by members of GW’s Institute for Magnetics Research has been published: C. A. Nwokoye, L. H. Bennett, E. Della Torre, M. Ghahremani, and F. A. Narducci. “Magneto-optical and magnetic properties in a Co/Pd multilayered thin film,” Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, 421, 1 (2017), pp. 230–233.

Prof. Michael Keidar (MAE) and his doctoral student Li Lin have published the following paper: L. Lin and M. Keidar. “Cold Atmospheric Plasma Jet in an Axial DC Electric Field,” Physics of Plasmas, 23, 083529 (2016).

Conferences & Presentations:

Prof. David Broniatowski (EMSE) participated in the online conference “Assessing Public Awareness,” held as part of Smarter Crowdsourcing – Zika and hosted by the NYU Governance Lab. The conference brought together academics from across the U.S., along with NGO representatives (UNICEF, WHO, and others) and governments that are directly grappling with the current Zika outbreak. Specifically, it included representatives from the health ministries in Argentina, Colombia, Brazil, and Panama.

Adjunct Prof. Charles Jackson (CS) will present two papers at the 44th Research Conference on Communications, Information and Internet Policy, which will be held at George Mason University’s Antonin Scalia Law School: 1) “Why the Incentive Auction is More Efficient that the Coasian Solution,” (Poster session: Friday, September 30, 5:45 pm); and 2) “ Defining Harmful Interference Efficiently” (Saturday, October 1, 12:15 pm).

Prof. Zhenyu Li (BME) gave an invited talk titled “Design Considerations for Optical Biosensing” at the SPIE Optics + Photonics 2016 - Ultrafast Nonlinear Imaging and Spectroscopy IV Conference , held August 28 – September 1 in San Diego, CA. Prof. Li also served on the conference program committee and chaired the Ultrafast Techniques session.

On August 16, Prof. Chung Hyuk Park (BME) gave an invited talk titled “Multi-modal Robotic Framework for Social and Emotional Interaction for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder”' at the EMBC 2016 Workshop on Research on Children Development: New Perspectives and Tools. On August 19, he presented “Consensus-based Approach for Human-Robot Emotional Interaction” at the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society Conference (EMBC). And on August 27-28, Prof. Park and his students Rachael Bevill and Srineil Nizambad presented their studies—“Behavioral Learning and Imitation for Music-Based Robotic Therapy for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder“ and “Behavioral Analysis Automation for Music-Based Robotic Therapy for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder”—at the IEEE International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication (RO-MAN 2016).

Student News

Doctoral student Guyue Liu (CS) presented the paper “OpenNetVM: A Platform for High Performance Network Service Chains” at the SIGCOMM Hot Topics on Middleboxes 2016 Workshop, held August 22-26 in Florianópolis, Brazil. The paper, co-authored with CS students Wei ZhangNeel Shah, and Phil Lopreiato, and their advisor Prof. Tim Wood (CS), describes a high speed software-based networking platform now available as open source.

Other News

GW Magazine recently published “‘Google Maps’ of the Miniscule,” an article highlighting the SEH’s new microscopy/imaging center. For more information on the Nano-fabrication and Imaging Center.

The Faculty Assembly will meet at 10:00 am on September 9 in the Jack Morton Auditorium. Election of faculty members to the Presidential Search Faculty Consultative Committee will be conducted. All full-time faculty (including non-tenured, research, and teaching faculty) are encouraged to participate and can vote. Please come and support our SEAS candidate. Also, there is likely to be discussion on the presidential search process and how the Faculty Consultative Committee will interact and advise the Board in its election of the next GW president.
