RESEARCH:
Prof. Michael Keidar (MAE) has received a three-year, $280,000 National Science Foundation grant for "Exploring plasma mechanism of synthesis of the ultra-long single wall carbon nanotubes in arc discharge plasma."  The goal of this research is to study the plasma mechanism for synthesizing ultra-long single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) in an arc discharge. Ultra-long SWNTs (lengths more than 10,000 times larger than their diameters) are expected to enable micro-electric motors and can act as useful nanoscale cables for conducting electricity or heat. Mass production and use will depend on understanding the science behind their synthesis.  This project will be co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. Prof. Ryan Vallance (MAE) is co-PI on this project.

CONFERENCES & PRESENTATIONS:
Prof. Julie Ryan (EMSE) was invited to participate and speak at the International Cyber Conflict Legal & Policy Conference 2009, an expert-level event arranged by the Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence (CCD COE) in cooperation with George Mason University Center for Infrastructure Protection (CIP). The conference took place in Tallinn, Estonia, September 9th – 11th.  The conference brought together experts in governance, public policy, military affairs, and academia to discuss the emerging challenges associated with cyber conflict.
Work is currently underway to document for publication the main ideas discussed at the conference.

Prof. Ryan was also invited to speak at the Information Security Compliance and Risk Management Institute (ISCRMI), which is an annual interdisciplinary event jointly sponsored by the University of Washington's Center for Information Assurance and Cybersecurity and Shidler Center for Law, Commerce and Technology.  This year, the ISCRMI was held September 16th – 17th at the University of Washington in Seattle.  The topic of Dr. Ryan's presentation was how to understand and measure security performance.

Prof. Wasyl Wasylkiwskyj (ECE) presented a lecture entitled “Some Limits on Achievable Intensity Reduction with an Optical Occulter” at NASA/Goddard Space Center on September 15th for the National Capital Section of the Optical Society of America.

Other:
Prof. Poorvi Vora (CS) has been notified that the city of Takoma Park, MD, will use the Scantegrity voting system for its city election, to be held on November 3, 2009, to elect a mayor and six council members. Prof. Vora and Stefan Popoveniuc, her graduated doctoral student, are part of the multi-university Scantegrity voting system team (collaborators include MIT; the University of Maryland Baltimore County; the University of Ottawa, Waterloo; the University of Newcastle, UK; and David Chaum, considered the inventor of secure electronic voting).  The software for the cryptographic core of the system was written by Dr. Popoveniuc as part of his doctoral dissertation. Harvard cryptographer, Ben Adida, will perform a cryptographic audit of the system and is blogging about it at http://benlog.com/articles/2009/09/08/auditing-the-takoma-park-election/  Prof. Vora’s and Dr. Popoveniuc's work on Scantegrity was partially supported by NSF Grant CNS 0831149.

Guest Vignette

Last month, EMSE held a Meet & Greet and advising session for new and current students. The event included a continental breakfast, introductions of the full-time faculty and staff, general information about the department and its various focus areas and research institutions, as well as the history of the EMSE Department, which has one of the oldest and largest engineering management programs in the country.  Plenty of time was provided for a Q&A session, and students also were able to meet with their advisors to discuss their courses for the Fall 2009 semester, as well as future courses in their program of study.  All agreed that the event was a success and the department plans to hold another Meet & Greet and Advising Session at the beginning of the spring semester.
