Volunteer and Get Involved!
Alumni support and involvement are extremely important to the continued growth and progress of SEAS. Giving of your personal time makes a significant impact on the lives of our students and alumni. Below are just a few of the many ways to get involved with SEAS and stay connected with your alma mater.
- Join the Engineer Alumni Association - The Engineer Alumni Association (EAA) helps promote engineering education at GW through an annual calendar of activities, including professional networking events, social gatherings, opportunities to participate as judges in local high school science fairs, and a speaker series. The EAA welcomes SEAS alumni and invites you to participate in any of its many activities. Join the board, join a committee, or just attend an event. Visit www.seas.gwu.edu/eaa.
- Mentor students or other alumni - Join the Career Advisor Network CAN and serve as a career advisor by sharing your experience, skills, and expertise with other alumni and current students. CAN allows you to connect with others to discuss career objectives and explore career interests. Visit www.alumni.gwu.edu for more information.
- Provide internships/co-ops for our current students - Exposure to the "real world" of the everyday workplace is extremely important for our students. Alumni can play an important role by offering our students an internship or co-op with their company or agency. E-mail Scott Amey, director of the SEAS Student Career Services Office (scott@scottamey.com), for more information.
- Participate in the SEAS Career Fair - A number of SEAS alumni own their own companies or work for large corporations that can benefit from student interns. Likewise, SEAS students can benefit from internships that give them real-world engineering experiences. The SEAS career fair, held each February, is a great way to help build connections between our students and alumni and to help each meet their needs.
- Speak to an engineering class or group of students - “A Day in the Life of an Engineer/Computer Scientist” helps to expand students' opportunities to hear and interact with renowned alumni drawn from the engineering and computer science fields. The program seeks to aid students who are interested in receiving guidance on the opportunities available with an engineering/computer science degree, and it exposes students to the engineering and computer science fields in a setting that provides for a high level of discussion and interaction between students and the alumnus.
- Host students for dinner - The Dinner with Alumni Program provides an opportunity for our undergraduate students to meet alumni who are willing to share their professional accomplishments and who are interested in developing closer ties with the University community. Whether you are a recent alumnus just starting on the professional path or an alumnus at the pinnacle of your career, your professional insight and experience are invaluable to our current undergraduates.
- Judge high school science fairs – Each spring, the Engineer Alumni Association organizes opportunities for alumni in the Washington, DC area to judge junior and senior high school science fairs. These one-day events allow alumni to encourage students to pursue studies in science and engineering, give back to their community, and promote admissions at GW SEAS.
If you are interested in participating in any of the above programs, please contact the SEAS Office of Advancement via e-mail at seasalum@gwu.edu or by phone at 202-994-8474.
