SEAS Colonial Cable
Greetings, SEAS Alumni,
Here's a look at what's been happening recently at SEAS:
Engineers' Week 2006 at SEAS
SEAS students put forth a good deal of effort to make Engineers' Week 2006 a success. Engineers' Week is wholly planned and implemented by students, and this year's E-Week schedule was chock full of activities.
Students participated in a wide range of activities that began on Friday, February 17th with the first-ever Academic Technical Bowl -- a quiz game that tests engineering knowledge -- and ended on Friday, February 24th with the annual favorite, the Engineers' Ball. Other activities included a science fair, a popsicle bridge contest, a saltine challenge, a paper airplane contest, and an alumninum foil boat contest. Students also had several opportunities to join job and internship fairs and panel discussions on outsourcing and engineering careers and futures.
Photos of some of the E-Week activities are available here.
The EAA Tailgater
More than 30 SEAS alumni and friends came out on February 8 to show their school spirit and to cheer on the #6-ranked GW men's basketball team in their game against Dayton. Colonials fans gathered in the dean's conference room in Tompkins Hall for a pre-game tailgater that included food, drink, and lots of laughter. They then headed over to the Smith Center to watch the game.
This event was sponsored by the Engineer Alumni Association. Photos of the tailgater are available here.
Arizona Alumni Reception with Dean Tong
Jim McDowell, MEA '73, and his wife Joanne hosted Phoenix-area alumni and parents on February 15, 2006 at the Wild Horse Pass Resort for a reception with Dean Timothy Tong. A number of SEAS alumni, friends, and prospective students joined Dean Tong and the McDowells at the reception, which has become an annual event thanks to the generosity of Jim McDowell. Jim is CEO and president of AAA of Arizona.
Photos of the reception are available here.
Transportation Research Board Reception
In late January the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) and the SEAS Office of Advancement hosted their first joint reception for SEAS alumni, and more than 30 alumni and friends attended. The reception was held here in DC, during the National Academies Transportation Research Board (TRB) 85th Annual Meeting. Jim E. Hall, a former Chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and a current partner at Hall & Associates, LLC, was the guest speaker for the evening.
The CEE Department hopes to host a reception again next year and to make the reception a tradition at the TRB meetings. To prepare for this, the CEE Department is now collecting the names and contact information of those who would like to be included in next year's reception.
If you would like to be notified of the reception next year, please send an e-mail to: cee@gwu.edu and type "TRB Reception" in the subject line. Please include in your contact information the telephone number and e-mail address in at which you prefer to be reached.
Feel free to browse photos from this year's TRB reception.
