SEAS Colonial Cable
Greetings, SEAS Alumni,
Here's a look at recent and upcoming SEAS activities and events:
SEAS Student Kenan Cole Named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America First Team
SEAS senior Kenan Cole--a member of the GW women's basketball team and a mechanical engineering major--has been selected an ESPN The Magazine First Team Academic All-American.
Despite a demanding major and a grueling schedule, Cole has managed to maintain a 3.92 grade point average. In addition, she is averaging 11.1 points and 4.9 rebounds for the GW women's team. Cole ranks sixth in the league in three-point field goal percentage at 40.5 percent (34-of-84), while shooting 41.1 percent from the field and 92.2 percent at the free throw line.
To read more about Cole, please see either the GW press release or the Washington Post story on her academic and athletic achievements.
Professor Cutler Wins NASA Research Grant
Professor Andrew Cutler of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering recently received a three-year, $595,000 grant from NASA's Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate, Fundamental Aeronautics Program, to further develop one of his areas of research. Funding for the first year of the grant will be $256,000. Details of his grant follow in the article below, republished with the permission of The GW Hatchet.
GW receives NASA grant for laser research
The GW Hatchet
March 1, 2007
NASA awarded $256,000 to GW's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences to research a laser technique to measure flame qualities.
CARS, which stands for Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering, is a laser technique that makes remote measurements in the temperature and gas qualities of flame. NASA is interested in this research for its application to supersonic combustion ram jets, nicknamed scramjets.
Engineering and Applied Sciences professor Andrew Cutler, who has participated in research projects at the NASA center in Hampton, Va., spearheaded GW's entry into a national research competition that allowed the SEAS department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering to receive NASA's grant. Cutler said about one in seven of the companies and universities that submitted proposals received grants. Other successful proposals came from University of Virginia, North Carolina State University, Stanford University and Ohio State University.
"I'm glad I was able to get money. Without it, my involvement (in this research) would have gone away," Cutler said.
Research in the CARS field will ideally culminate in the creation of scramjets with air breathing engines designed for hypersonic flight. These scramjets would have an advantage over rockets because they would capture air from the atmosphere and they would be much lighter as a result of a minimal need for fuel and oxygen tanks.
"The idea is very old, it has been being investigated since before the Apollo program," Cutler said of the research. "It's difficult to make it work."
The money allotted to GW will go toward hiring a research scientist and at least one graduate student and equipment fees. Cutler will lead the research project.
Nominations Sought for GW Engineering Hall of Fame
In November 2006, SEAS launched a new recognition program to honor the most distinguished individuals who have been associated with SEAS during their lives and careers. The GW Engineering Hall of Fame recognizes SEAS alumni as well as faculty, staff, and friends who during their careers have made sustained and meritorious contributions to engineering/technology and/or management. These individuals bring distinction to GW through their significant achievements and their contributions to their professions, the University, and society-at-large.
SEAS is eager to receive nominations of individuals to be considered for future induction. The deadline for consideration for induction at the November 2007 Hall of Fame banquet is March 16, 2007. Alumni who would like to nominate an individual for the GW Engineering Hall of Fame, should complete a nomination form and send it to:

Attention SEAS Alumni: Classes 1996 to 2006
Dear SEAS Alumnus/a:
We hope that you received our recent letter informing you that SEAS is conducting an alumni survey as part of our academic self-study for our ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) accreditation and our Academic Program Review process for GW.
This is an important study for us, and we are writing to ask your help in completing it. Because you graduated from a SEAS undergraduate program between 1996 and 2006, we are contacting you-and all alumni from this time period-to ask your impressions of your undergraduate education in engineering or computer science. We will use the results from the survey to help improve the quality of our academic programs and ensure that our graduates are well prepared for employment and/or post-baccalaureate education.
You can help us a great deal by taking a few minutes to share your experiences and opinions about your undergraduate education from SEAS. You can complete the survey by going online and filling it out electronically. Please find the electronic survey at: https://www.gwu.edu/oapa/seas/seas_alumni_2006.htm.
Your responses are completely confidential and will be analyzed by the GW Office of Academic Planning and Assessment, not by SEAS. Answers will be released only as summaries in which no individual's answers can be identified. Your name will not be connected to your answers in any way. This survey is voluntary.
If you have any questions or comments about this study, we would be happy to talk with you. Please feel free to contact us through Evan Fertel, executive coordinator, Associate Dean's Office, at efertel@gwu.edu. Thank you very much for helping with this important study.
Sincerely,
Timothy W. Tong, Ph.D.

Invite you to join us for a complimentary mini-workshop on angel investing
Angel investors are the primary funders of new technology-based startups, annually investing around $30 billion in 50,000 deals across the country. In an effort to help startup creation and funding in the Greater Washington area, we invite you to join us for a free mini-workshop on angel investing. This is a great networking opportunity to meet other area leaders interested in making the Greater Washington region a premier technology cluster, by commercializing the area's break-through university and federal lab technologies through new startup creation and funding.
Angel investing isn't just about providing capital. It is also about people who want to do well by doing good. Angel investing is ideal for successful entrepreneurs who have exited their business and have an interest in staying involved in early-stage companies, or high net-worth individuals with senior business experience, who now have the time and interest in helping the next generation of area entrepreneurs. Angel investing involves mentoring and providing strategic advice, along with helping to recruit senior management and provide access to institutional investors and strategic partners.
The workshop will be led by active angel investors, serial entrepreneurs, regional venture capitalists, and private equity experts. The mini-workshop will cover:
- How to structure the investment deal
- Due diligence
- Managing dilution
- Knowing your exit strategy
