Message from Dean Timothy Tong

It's hard to believe that we've completed another regular academic year here at SEAS and GW. We've just graduated a class of more than 480 engineers and computer scientists and are already gearing up to welcome the Class of 2010 in the fall.

In addition to welcoming new students in the fall, we hope to welcome back some former students, too. We'd like to invite you, our alumni, to "come back." By "come back" I mean this: please consider getting reconnected to SEAS through the Engineer Alumni Association or by participating in one of our many volunteer activities. Many of the activities require a minimal time commitment, and we appreciate any and all donations of your time, talents, or gifts.

Thanks in advance, and enjoy your summer.

Sincerely,
Signature Timothy Tong

Timothy W. Tong, Ph.D.
Dean

What's up at SEAS:

Congratulations to the Graduates of The Class of 2006!

SEAS honored its 486 graduates at the 2006 SEAS Celebration on Saturday evening, May 20th. With a full complement of parents, siblings, spouses, children, and other relatives and friends present to honor their accomplishments, the engineers and computer scientists individually walked across the stage at the Smith Center to receive their diplomas, handshakes, and congratulations from Dean Tong and the SEAS faculty.

The ceremony included the presentation of 28 student awards to recognize various forms of student achievement; the Engineer Alumni Achievement Award, which was presented to Mr. Gary Bard (MS '63); the keynote address by Dr. David Karlgaard (D.Sc. '74); a student speech by Nazanin Azizian, the winner of the SEAS Celebration speech competition; and the recognition of each graduate.

After the ceremony, graduates, their guests, and SEAS faculty, staff, and alumni, gathered at the Marvin Center for a post-Celebration reception.

Gary Bard (MS '63) Receives EAA Engineer Alumni Achievement Award

Gary Bard (left) and Sean Walsh, EAA President (right). Sean presented the EAA Alumni Achievement Award to Gary at the 2006 SEAS Celebration on May 20th.

At last month's Commencement Exercises, the GW Engineer Alumni Association proudly presented its annual Engineer Alumni Achievement Award to Mr. Gary Bard.

Gary received his master of science degree in engineering from SEAS in 1963 and then spent the next 35 years in a successful career in electronics, communications, and computer science. He was the chief executive officer of five companies during his career, retiring in 1998.

Among his accomplishments are the several patents that he holds in the field of computer display technology and analog to digital conversion, as well as his success in implementing a wholesale distribution system that provided for the stock control and distribution of every spare part of every component of every weapons system used by the US Air Force. At the time, it was possibly the largest wholesale distribution system ever implemented.

Throughout his career Gary was, and remains, active in a wide range of community and other volunteer activities. Gary has been a member of the SEAS National Advisory Council for seven years and has been its chairman for the last six years. He has been an active member of the Council throughout his tenure, contributing his time, energy, and ideas to efforts to improve the School and the education that we provide our students.

In addition, Gary's commitment to SEAS goes beyond service and includes a generous gift to endow a fund that supports an e-commerce curriculum at SEAS.

Upon receiving the Alumni Achievement Award, Gary offered the following words of advice to this year's graduates: "At some time in your careers and even when you are retired, give back. Offer your help, your experience, and your resources. For in giving, you serve a noble purpose and you are rewarded with great self-satisfaction. It is in that satisfaction you learn that in truth you will receive far more than you give."

SEAS congratulates Gary Bard on his career achievements and on receiving the 2006 EAA Engineer Alumni Achievement Award.

SEAS Students Inducted into the Order of the Engineer

On Friday, May 12th the Engineers' Council (E-Council), the Engineer Alumni Association (EAA), and SEAS hosted the 2006 Order of the Engineer Induction Ceremony and reception at Alumni House. Approximately 40 people were in attendance to honor the 20 SEAS students and three SEAS alumni who were inducted into the Order that evening.

The guest speaker at the ceremony was Poh C. Chua (BS'88; JD'97), a senior associate at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LL. Poh and his wife, Claire, were also among those inducted into the Order. Dr. Richard Soland, the acting associate dean for SEAS, spoke to those gathered about the obligations of membership in the Order and then presented a certificate and ring to each inductee.

The evening also included a dessert reception and a toast to new members by Kim Kessler, the programs chair of the EAA, and Sara Cornell, the E-Council president.

SEAS congratulates the 2006 inductees to the Order of the Engineer.

MAE Students Hold a Winch Car Design Competition

On another beautiful spring day, SEAS faculty, staff and students joined Professor Kerr-Jia Lu and her MAE 191 students for the winch car design competition held outside Tompkins Hall. Students in Professor Lu's mechanical design class participated in the competition as part of the class' design requirements. At the beginning of the semester, MAE 191 students were given a task to build a machine that can winch itself up a 45-degree slope and park itself within a designated area on the slope. Student teams were in charge of the entire design process, from the initial conceptual design to the detailed analysis, and finally the manufacturing and testing of the machine.

While the time required to complete the task was the main criterion on which the designs were judged, the ability to park along the slope and within the designated area were also considered in the evaluation. Six student teams competed, and the winning entry was designed and built by "Team Ramrod," whose car was fastest at 12V.

The course objective of MAE 191 is to integrate and extend theoretical knowledge taught in previous classes into a design environment. The competition provides an opportunity for students to gain hands-on experiences and practice their problem-solving techniques on real engineering problems.
