SEAS Colonial Cable
Greetings, SEAS Alumni,
We might be in the middle of the long winter stretch, but SEAS has plenty of activities for you to participate in on those quiet winter evenings and weekends. Check them out below.
"From Lab to IPO" Lecture Series
Whether planning a start-up or just being a strategic employee who receives stock options, this lecture series deals with what you need to know to succeed. It discusses the practical and legal issues that you will deal with every day in taking a great idea from the lab and creating a successful hi-tech or biotech company. Attendees are provided with lectures and readings to enable them to identify the major issues in organizing a business venture around intellectual property, including employment agreements, stock options, angel and venture capital, IPOs and tech transfer from university/government labs. This lecture series is appropriate for attendees who have started a new company, intend to start one, or are in a senior management position, such as CIO, CTO, CEO or strategic employee with stock options.

Engineer Alumni Association Seeking Nominations for Board Membership
The Nominating Committee of the Engineer Alumni Association is now accepting applications for membership on the EAA Board. There are currently five vacancies to fill on the Board for the 2006-2007 Board. Any alumnus of SEAS is eligible but in particular, we are seeking mid-career professionals and graduate alumni.
Members will be expected to attend meetings of the Board which are held every other month, as well as serve on one or more of the EAA Committees which normally meets on the off months of the Board meetings.
Some of the EAA activities that Board members are involved in planning and executing are the following:
- Providing judges at several DC area regional science fairs and inviting the winners to an on-campus reception to recognize them, encourage them to pursue an engineering career and to make them aware of the opportunities available at SEAS
- Representing the interests of SEAS alumni by providing representatives to the university wide GW Alumni Association (http://www.gwu.edu/~alumni/gwaa/index.html)
- Holding a resume critiquing event for current students and alumni
- Calling admitted students to encourage them to come to SEAS
- Holding social events including Happy Hours for young alumni and sponsoring an annual basketball tailgater
- Recognizing alumni for both service and achievement through the presentation of awards
- Encouraging and recruiting engineering alumni to help current students by signing up for the new GWAA mentoring program or hosting a dinner for students.
Interested alumni are requested to send an email to seasalum@gwu.edu with "EAA Board Membership" in the subject line and include the following information:

Engineer Alumni Association to Participate in Regional Science Fairs
Looking for Alumni to Volunteer as Science Fair Judges |
 |
The George Washington University Engineer Alumni Association (EAA) is looking for School of Engineering and Applied Science alumni to volunteer as judges for science fairs in the Washington, D.C. region.
The purpose of EAA involvement in local science fairs is to encourage youth to consider the science and engineering professions, increase awareness of opportunities in these fields, and to promote GW and SEAS.
All science fair winners and their parents will be invited to a Dean's reception to be held in April at the Foggy Bottom Campus. Students and parents will have the opportunity to visit SEAS and meet Dean Timothy Tong, members of the faculty, current students, and alumni.
The EAA will participate in the following regional science fairs:
Montgomery County - March 11, 2006
Northern Virginia Science and Engineering Fair (Alexandria, Arlington, Falls Church) - March 11, 2006
District of Columbia - March 18, 2006
Fairfax County - March 18, 2006
Prince William-Manassas Regional Science Fair - March 18, 2006
Prince George - April 1, 2006
To volunteer as a science fair judge, please send an email to seasalum@gwu.edu. Please indicate "Science Fair Judging" in the subject line. Alternatively, you may call the SEAS Advancement Office at 202-994-9866.
SEAS Students Building Vehicle for Air Force
|
 |
When many GW students take a part-time job, it involves answering phones, filing documents and stuffing envelopes. But when Kemp Kernstine found a part-time job, he ended up overseeing an integral part of a research project funded by the U.S. Air Force.
Kernstine, a junior majoring in mechanical engineering with a concentration in aerospace engineering, is the leader of a project supervised by professor David Chichka. The project, funded by a three-year grant from the Air Force's Office of Scientific Research, consists of building an unmanned aerial vehicle out of balsa wood and plywood.
"We're building a prototype for more aerodynamic planes," Kernstine explained. "Right now we want something to experiment on."
The vehicle is being assembled in Staughton Hall by a team consisting of Kernstine and five other undergraduate engineering students. When finished, the vehicle will be 12 to 15 feet long, weigh 50 pounds and be capable of reaching speeds of 50 miles per hour.
Kernstine hopes that the vehicle will be used by the Air Force in a variety of applications. "The Air Force plans on using the vehicle for a photo-capturing project where the plane would mimic the plane ahead of it rather than using GPS," he said.
Kernstine first got involved in the project last year, when it was started by Chichka and undergraduate Adam Nadel. After Nadel graduated in May, Kernstine became the natural choice for the position of team leader.
"He was the most reliable, and the most dedicated, of all the students involved," Chichka said. So dedicated, in fact, that Kernstine spent the summer at GW working on the project. "(The project) hadn't gotten to the point that I wanted it," Kernstine explained. Because of his team's diligent work, Kernstine hopes to launch the vehicle in late February - long before the deadline in May.
"Kemp has an amazing work ethic," said junior Courtney Moore, who is in charge of building the vehicle's fuselage. "If there is something he needs to know to get the job done, he learns it - and fast."
"(Kernstine) keeps me motivated to work harder," said sophomore Corey Walker, who is involved in the project.
Kernstine has participated in a variety of endeavors in addition to the unmanned vehicle. He is working with professor Charles Garris in supersonic flow research and is leading another student team under the supervision of Professor Ker-Jia Lu to develop dynamic wings that change shape in mid-flight. Supersonic flow typically occurs when objects travel faster than the speed of sound.
Kernstine is also the vice president of the GW chapter of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronomics and a member of three different engineering competition teams: the steel bridge team, the robot team and the mini baja team, which designs off-road vehicles.
Kernstine explained his packed schedule with a shrug. "I like to stay busy."
SEAS Career Services Office Launches Internships/Jobs Website
In December, 2005 the SEAS Career Services Office launched its Internships/Jobs website. Through this website, undergraduate and graduate engineering and computer science students at SEAS receive important information about opportunities for summer internships, part-time spring/fall jobs, and full-time jobs. They also have access to helpful career aides such as "Tips for Writing an Effective Resume", "Tips for Conducting an Effective Interview", and "Tips for Finding a Full Time Job".
In the first three weeks of operation, more than 200 SEAS undergraduate and graduate students registered for this service. When an opportunity is posted, all registered students who match the position requirements are automatically emailed with a notice of the opportunity. Scott Amey, volunteer director of the SEAS Career Services Office, stated that more than 65 opportunities have been posted to-date and that approximately 50 to 75 additional opportunities will be posted before the end of May, 2006.
This website was designed and developed by a SEAS senior and is free of charge to both students and organizations. Please check it out at: http://seas.gwu.edu/jobs.
If your company or organization would like to post an opportunity, please contact Scott Amey at amey@gwu.edu.
SEAS is proud to announce the GW Engineering group on LinkedIn, an independent, commercial, online networking tool.
