Greetings, SEAS Alumni:
Here's a look at recent and upcoming SEAS activities and events:
SEAS Alumnus Larry Sumney Receives National Medal of Technology on Behalf of SRC
On July 27th, President Bush presented the National Medal of Technology to Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC) for its critical contributions to the U.S. chip industry. Receiving the award for SRC was Larry W. Sumney (MEA), the CEO and president of SRC and a SEAS alumnus.
The National Medal of Technology represents the nation’s highest honor for technological innovation. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce,
SRC was recognized “for building the world’s largest and most successful university research force to support the rapid growth of the semiconductor industry; for proving the concept of collaborative research as the first high-tech research consortium; and for creating the concept and methodology that evolved into the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors.”
Based in Research Park, North Carolina, SRC is a university-research consortium for semiconductors and related technologies. Larry Sumney has been CEO and president of SRC since its inception 25 years ago
SEAS congratulates alumnus Larry Sumney!

Thank you and we look forward to hearing from you.
SEAS Hosts Engineering Lab Day for Middle School Students
For the second year in a row, SEAS hosted an Engineering Laboratory Day for middle school students from the TEMS (Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Science) Program of Alexandria City Public Schools. The TEMS Program is a five-week summer enrichment program that aims to keep middle school students interested in engineering, mathematics, and science by allowing them to explore these areas through fun projects.
This year, the TEMS students explored engineering through cars, robots, bridges, and roller coasters. On July 13th, 50 students participated in civil and mechanical engineering laboratories at GW to prepare them for these projects. During the half-day of activities here, the students learned about basic principles of structural design, geo-technical issues, material testing, design planning and team work. They also were introduced to the Steel Bridge and Mini-Baja student competitions at GW, and they had the opportunity to see a college campus first hand.
SEAS is proud to announce the GW Engineering group on LinkedIn, an independent, commercial, online networking tool.
SEAS has partnered with LinkedIn to provide this service for SEAS alumni, students, faculty, and staff, and we invite you to join the GW Engineering group. We hope that you will find it a useful tool for business networking, job searches, or simply for locating other members of the SEAS community.
To join the GW Engineering group, just click here and complete a LinkedIn member profile. Access to the group is free, completely optional, and is available only to members of the SEAS community.
About online business networking: You can use LinkedIn to expand and track your network in an organized and systematic way. The GW Engineering group on LinkedIn provides an ideal starting point, and it also provides a point of contact for people outside the SEAS community who are connected to your fellow GW Engineering group members.
