Greetings, SEAS Alumni:

Here's a look at recent and upcoming SEAS activities and events:

Venture Capital/Angels Workshop

Last week, SEAS, CET2C (Council of Entrepreneurial Transfer and Commercialization), and the Angel Investors of Greater Washington hosted a successful venture capital/angels workshop. Approximately 80 people attended, including angel investors from GW and the greater Washington, D.C. area. Those attending represented venture capital firms; federal government agencies, such as the Department of Commerce; economic development agencies; and area universities, including Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland. Nine start-up companies--many of which have a GW connection--made presentations to the group.

This was an important event for SEAS, because it is brought together an array of organizations to try and help fund start-up companies. Eventually, SEAS hopes to commercialize its technologies through these types of efforts.

SEAS Student Kachi Odoemene Models Academic Success

Kachi Odoemene is a rising junior who has had a great deal of academic success here at GW. Kachi, who studies biomedical engineering, has received two very prestigious research awards over the course of his studies.

Last summer, Kachi was awarded the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Undergraduate Summer Research Award, a research fellowship that gives undergraduates the opportunity to work on individual research projects under the guidance of a research mentor. Kachi worked under the mentorship of Professor Mark Reeves of the Physics Department, where he conducted research that combined biology, physics, chemistry, and engineering. "My project was to develop a substitute technique for separating proteins and DNA using gold nanoparticle wires, nanoparticle electrophoresis," says Kachi.

Following his summer experience, Kachi began a Gamov Research Fellowship during the 2006-2007 academic year. The Gamov Fellowships are awarded to the most academically talented GW undergraduates and are designed to help develop the next generation of scholars and researchers by giving them opportunities to participate in mentored research with a faculty member.

Kachi originally proposed to work on learning, understanding and characterizing scanning devices used for optical coherence tomography and other imaging methods. However, because of his summer experience in the Howard Hughes Program, he had the opportunity to join a collaboration project between Professor Jason Zara of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Professor Reeves. "The goal of this project is to integrate gold nanoparticles with the optical scanning device to create a form of chemical sensor that can detect foreign analytes in the body through change in resistance and resonant frequency of the scanners," says Kachi.

Kachi is finishing his research now and will make a final presentation later this month. When asked if he would like say anything more about his successes, Kachi replied, "I just want to give special thanks to God, my family and friends, my mentors-Professor Zara and Professor Reeves-SEAS and GW."

Professor Zaghloul Elected President of IEEE Sensors Council

The Administration Committee of the IEEE Sensors Council has elected SEAS Professor Mona Zaghloul to be the president of the IEEE Sensors Council. Her term will be for two years, 2008 and 2009.

Professor Zaghloul also will be awarded an honorary doctor of engineering degree--honoris causa--from the University of Waterloo, Canada in June 2007. This honorary degree recognizes her academic career in the international circuit community and coincides with the university's 50th anniversary celebration. Professor Zaghloul is the first women to earn a Ph.D. in engineering from the University of Waterloo, one of the top engineering schools in Canada.

GW Alumni Event in Hampton Roads

More than 40 GW alumni gathered on March 21, 2007 in Hampton Roads, Virginia, for an alumni event. Dean Timothy Tong of SEAS and Dean Mary Futrell of GW's Graduate School of Education and Human Development (GSEHD) were at the event to give an update on GW and their respective schools. Greg Logan, program director at the Hampton Roads Center, welcomed everyone to the gathering. The event was sponsored by SEAS, GSEHD, and the GWAA, and it was a great opportunity for alumni who participated in the SEAS off-campus programs to reconnect with their former classmates and also meet and network with new alumni. More photos are available here.

SEAS Alumni Happy Hour - Photos

SEAS alumni gathered in March at Continental Modern Pool Lounge in Rosslyn for a Happy Hour. The event was sponsored by the Engineer Alumni Association.

SEAS is proud to announce the GW Engineering group on LinkedIn, an independent, commercial, online networking tool.

SEAS has partnered with LinkedIn to provide this service for SEAS alumni, students, faculty, and staff, and we invite you to join the GW Engineering group. We hope that you will find it a useful tool for business networking, job searches, or simply for locating other members of the SEAS community.

To join the GW Engineering group, just click here and complete a LinkedIn member profile. Access to the group is free, completely optional, and is available only to members of the SEAS community.

About online business networking: You can use LinkedIn to expand and track your network in an organized and systematic way. The GW Engineering group on LinkedIn provides an ideal starting point, and it also provides a point of contact for people outside the SEAS community who are connected to your fellow GW Engineering group members.

About privacy: Please read the LinkedIn privacy policy to answer any concerns about privacy.
