SEAS Has a New Dean

The George Washington University has selected Dr. David S. Dolling to replace Timothy Tong as dean of GW's School of Engineering and Applied Science. President Steven Knapp announced the selection on July 18th, and Dr. Dolling will assume his post on September 1, 2008.

Dr. Dolling is an internationally recognized aerospace engineer. He is also currently the associate dean for academic affairs, Joe C. Walter, Jr. Chair in Engineering, and professor of aerospace engineering and engineering mechanics at the Cockrell School of Engineering at the University of Texas, Austin. He was invited to join the University of Texas faculty in 1983 after six years at Princeton University as a researcher and lecturer. Dr. Dolling graduated from London University with an undergraduate degree in aeronautical engineering in 1971, and he received a NATO scholarship and spent three years at the Von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics in Brussels, Belgium. In 1977, he earned his Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from London University.

In the press release announcing his selection, Dolling said, "I am delighted to be offered this opportunity to assume the leadership of the School of Engineering and Applied Science. This is a pivotal moment in GW's history as we prepare to make new investments in engineering and applied sciences to strengthen further GW's undergraduate, graduate, and professional educational offerings, to expand its many, multi-faceted, interdisciplinary research programs, and to develop new areas of expertise."

SEAS alumni will have opportunities to learn more about Dr. Dolling in the coming months (including the upcoming "Meet the Dean" event during Alumni Weekend). In the meantime, please see the University press release for more details on his career.

The Washington Post's Gene Weingarten Tests Out GW's Driving Simulator

The Washington Post's Gene Weingarten visited GW's Virginia Campus last month to conduct an experiment and satisfy his curiosity. Weingarten was a guest of SEAS Professor Azim Eskandarian and the Center for Intelligent Systems Research, where he strapped himself into the car that is part of the lab's driving simulator and tested his driving skills while intoxicated.

The results of his test appear in this tongue-in-cheek article.

Call for Alumni Volunteers

There are many ways for SEAS alumni to get involved at GW. The Office of Alumni Relations provides a number of opportunities for lifelong engagement with the university, including volunteering for Engineering Alumni Association events and programming, Alumni Weekend, the Admissions and Parents Program, and the Career Advisor Network. If you are interested in becoming involved, please contact Erin Pitts at (202) 994-2355 or at epitts@gwu.edu.
