Undergraduate Programs
Civil Engineering
Civil and Environmental Engineering encompass those branches of engineering
most related to the control and improvement of our environment and the
physical conditions of life. Study in this field prepares students for
careers in the planning, design, construction, and management of society's
infrastructure as well as the sustainment and improvement of the natural
environment. It also provides the scientific and technological background
necessary for research and careers in:
- Advanced material development and application
- Environmental engineering system design and management
- Geotechnical design and analysis
- Intelligent transportation systems
- Structural engineering
- Transportation safety engineering
- Water resources engineering
With a strong foundation in physics, chemistry, mathematics, computer
programming, and the humanities and social sciences, the civil engineering
curriculum focuses on studies in structural, transportation, geotechnical,
and materials engineering. Computer applications are an integral part
of many courses in this curriculum, especially in computer-aided drafting,
geographic information systems, computer-aided civil engineering systems,
computational mechanics, design optimization, and laboratory data, visualization,
and reduction.

The option in environmental engineering provides a strong foundation
in environmental chemistry, water resources, wastewater treatment process
and design, hazardous waste, and air pollution.
Current areas of faculty research in the fields of civil and environmental
engineering within SEAS include:
- Biotechnology for wastewater treatment
- Computational methods in fluid and solid mechanics
- Natural resource planning and management
- Soil mechanics
- Structural analysis, design and testing
- Water resources and river mechanics
