Hurricane Conferences 2006

The 60th Interdepartmental Hurricane Conference will be held on March 20-24,
2006 at the Riverview Plaza Hotel in Mobile, Alabama. Hosted by the
Office of the Federal Coordinator for Meteorological Services and Supporting
Research, this year’s theme is titled Building on the Historic 2005 Season.
The conference provides a forum for federal agencies and representatives to
review the Nation’s Hurricane Forecast and Warning Program and make future

The National Hurricane Conference will be held on April 10-14, 2006 at the
Rosen Centre Hotel in Orlando, Florida. This conference provides professional
training, workshops, and exhibitions for hurricane preparedness. Additionally,
the Emergency Management Institute and the National Hurricane Conference are
providing special EMI training sessions including topics such as Community
Mass Care Management, Emergency Planning and Special Needs, and Hurricane
Planning. Based on the quantity and degree of hurricanes throughout
2005, this year’s conference will focus on how, when, and where the problems
occurred and develop better plans and strategies for application in the future.

The Governor’s Hurricane Conference will be held on May 8-12, 2006 at the
Greater Ft. Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center (BCCC). This
year will be the 20th anniversary of the Governor’s Hurricane Conference which
will hold training sessions, workshops, and exhibitions on-site. With
over 3,000 attendees in 2005, the conference address the training needs of
the emergency services community and lessons learned from the 2004/2005 Hurricane
seasons. Speakers include responders, federal officials, local and
national disaster agencies, and private businesses. Directors and Officers
offer the opportunity to tour the National Hurricane Center in Miami and
local emergency operations centers throughout Ft. Lauderdale.

The Texas Hurricane Conference will be held on May 23-25, 2006 at the Ford
Park Convention Center in Beaumont, Texas. Local officials, first responders,
and volunteer organization participants will discuss issues regarding evacuation,
sheltering and re-entry after the storm with the goal of sharing information
to improve coordination and planning for a hurricane.

The Sixth International Conference on Diversity in Organisations, Communities,
and Nations will be held on June 12-15, 2006 at the Sheraton Hotel in New
Orleans. In addition to the goal of combining scholarly, government,
and private industry to discuss concepts of diversity and community issues
in a global world, this year the conference will include a special focus on
New Orleans, Hurricane Katrina, and its aftermath. Presentations on
Katrina include papers such as Tsunamis, Hurricanes and Other Natural Disasters;
The Aftermath of Hurricane Katrina: An Analysis of the Post 9/11 Organizational
Structure of FEMA and its Consequences; and The Cost of Place After Hurricane
Katrina.
