US Response to the Earthquake in Bam, Iran Dr. Anthony Macintyre

The George Washington University Institute for Crisis, Disaster and
Risk Management is proud to announce the fifth Homeland Security,
Emergencyand Risk Management Forum of the 2003 - 2004 academic year on Thursday
February 26, 2004 from 4:00 - 6:00 PM in room 403 of the GWU Marvin
Center (800 21st Street, NW, Washington, DC convenient to the Foggy Bottom
Metro Station). Refreshments will be served during the 4:00 - 4:30 PM social
period and the forum will commence promptly at 4:30 PM. There is no
registration fee for the forum series, however we do request that you
RSVP (see RSVP information at the end of this message).
We are also proud to announce that for the fourth consecutive year,
Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), is providing
financial support for the forum series.
Program: On December 26th, 2003, a devastating earthquake struck the
ancient town of Bam located in southeast Iran. The government of Iran
accepted international offers of assistance including those by the US
Government. Search and Rescue as well as medical assets were
subsequently
deployed and led by the US Agency for International Development/Office
of
US Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA). This presentation will
describe the efforts of US personnel while highlighting issues such as
the
response systems utilized and the integration of international
resources.
Presenter: Anthony Macintyre, MD is a Board Certified Emergency
Physician
and Associate Professor with The Department of Emergency Medicine at
The
George Washington University. His academic career has focused on
medical
emergency planning and response at various levels. Dr. Macintyre has
served as the medical director for Fairfax County’s Urban Search and
Rescue team since 1995. His work with the team has involved
deployments
to the bombing of the Murrah building in Oklahoma City (1995), the
bombing
of the US Embassy in Nairobi (1998), the Pentagon terrorist attack, and
to
several international earthquakes. Dr. Macintyre has assisted the
Federal
Emergency Management Agency (now part of the Department of Homeland
Security) in the restructuring of the medical components of the Urban
Search and Rescue System.
