Upcoming Hurricane Conferences by Debbie Guha There are several upcoming hurricane conferences that will be taking place around the country in 2004. Each conference addresses issues relating to hurricanes and hurricane preparedness. 26th Annual National Hurricane
Conference This year’s national conference will be held at the Wyndham Palace Resort & Spa in Lake Buena Vista, FL from April 5-9th. Among the sponsors of the conference are included FEMA, Florida Shore & Beach Preservation Association, Institute for Business and Home Safety, International Association of Emergency Managers, and many more. The conference is open to all public and private industry officials. The Emergency Management Institute will also be holding several sessions and workshops open to all conference participants. Special courses will be offered in debris management, emergency operations, recovery from disaster, emergency planning and special needs, mitigation planning for the local government, and hurricane planning. An awards ceremony will also be held at the conference, to honor those who have made significant accomplishments in the hurricane disaster community. Further details of the conference and registration information are available at www.hurricanemeeting.com. Second Annual Mississippi Hurricane
Conference Sponsored by the Mississippi Emergency Agency and the Gulf Coast Emergency Management Officials, this conference will be taking place from May 4 – 6th at the Palace Casino and Conference Center in Biloxi, Mississippi. The conference is directed towards all members of the emergency management community, including first responders, private and volunteer organizations, and virtually anyone who has experience with hurricane preparedness, response or recovery. Valuable information will be provided at the conference regarding planning, preparedness, training, and mitigation efforts geared towards protecting citizens against this natural hazard. More information on registration and attendance can be obtained from www.msema.org. Governor’s Hurricane Conference This conference will be held at the Tampa Convention Center in Florida from May 24-28th. The conference is sponsored by the state, and jointly co-sponsored by the Florida Department of Community Affairs, Florida Emergency Preparedness Association, and the American Red Cross. This year’s theme for the conference is “Unifying Florida’s Hurricane Culture…A Model All Hazards Approach”. Through several workshops, training sessions, and networking opportunities, the concepts, lessons, principles, and techniques used to manage risks and hazards will be incorporated in approaching the hurricane disaster phenomenon. Various professions will be brought together to discuss the challenges brought about by such a hazard. This conference is the state’s largest venue for extensive training programs targeting anyone involved in emergency management and preparedness. An awards ceremony is also scheduled to be held. For more information on the conference and how to register, visit www.flghc.org. Texas Disaster Training Institute Not solely pertaining to hurricane hazards, but still relevant to its preparedness and response, this conference will take place at Temple College in Temple, Texas from March 13-20th. The program, sponsored by the Mid-Tex Chapter of the American Red Cross and Knight Star Critical Event Consultants, will bring together the disaster-response community to hold training courses, forums, disaster exercises, exhibitors, and demonstrations. This program is invaluable to those who are expected to respond to critical hazards. For more information, visit: www.knightstar.us/redcross.asp.
