FEMA’s Higher Education Project is working to encourage and support the distribution, through media and mot importantly through educational programs, of all emergency management related information to colleges and universities across the states. As with the development of many professions, a solid educational foundation is key to the advancement of the profession. It is an important step in the profession when more and more applicants can come to jobs with a degree in the emergency management field. It is also a positive step in including this information in other courses and programs offered at the colleges and universities. FEMA has prepared sample curriculum for associate’s degrees, with the hope that the project can be expanded into the local community colleges across the country. This availability will translate itself into managers and leaders, engineers and teacher in many diverse fields beginning their careers with a baseline understanding of mitigation, preparedness, and other skills necessary for the creation of disaster-resilient or disaster-resistant communities and businesses.
